It’s the middle of fall. Leaves will be turning those magnificent colors very soon and providing nature’s patchwork quilt on the ground. Craft shows and fall festivals are on many of our calendars. Yetmany gardeners think of this time of the year as bulb planting season. Gardening, like so many things in life, requires thinking ahead. In this case, two seasons ahead. A colorful spring landscape does not happen by chance. Now is the time to survey the landscape and determine what areas can be enhanced by the addition of spring blooms. For gardening purposes, the term bulb includes other…

By Janice Ganoe When a small group of faithful followers met together in a home in 1831, no one imagined that 135 years later Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church on the corner of Jefferson Davis Highway and Harrowgate Road would flourish. Named Arrowfield Church by this group of Presbyterians, a building was later constructed on land conveyed by deed to the trustees stating it could only be used for the purpose of preaching, Sabbath school, and prayer meetings. The deed also stipulated that any minister of the Gospel could hold services. Fast forward to May 1864 during the War Between…

T his upcoming week is recognized by the National Fire Protection Agency and the fire service as Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme is “Don’t Wait-Check the Date.” What it means is that smoke alarms need to be replaced if they are ten years old or older. The message normally centers on changing batteries, proper placement, and regular testing. This is the first time that I remember a theme that focuses on replacing old smoke alarms. This would be a good time, if you do not have a CO detector, to replace your smoke alarm with a combination detector. If…

Chester Lions Club wishes to thank all of the community who donated to their White Cane fund raiser recently. Although it was the first time that they did not reach their goal, that was not because of lack of support from the community. The Lions do get their locations authorized by the retail sites well in advance of their Spring and Fall fundraiser weekends. The Chester Lions get the majority of their funds for the year from those two weekends. All of the money collected at the two White Cane weekends stays in the community and is used for the…

Dinwiddie had racked up points and defensive stops on the way to an unbeaten record heading into Friday’s Central District match-up with visiting Thomas Dale. While the Generals emerged with a 28-19 victory, things didn’t look so good for the home team as the evening progressed. “I was concerned at practice [Thursday],” said Dinwiddie coach Billy Mills. “I know we have had a good run, but we hadn’t really been challenged. We had experienced a team making a run at us this year.” Thomas Dale was ready, and they capitalized on some Dinwiddie special teams mishaps early on. A shanked…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. As of this writing they have finished the first of three presidential debates….and the world kept on turning without missing a step. Now of course we have two more presidential debates and a Vice President debate [yawn!] to get through…but I suspect we will survive those as well. The debate went pretty much as I suspected it would. Hillary was well prepared as any lawyer would be…standing straight and stiff….reciting memorized lines with a slight amused smile, while Trump…came in pretty much unprepared…shooting from the hip and foot…along with…
