August sales soar on year, rebound from restrained July According to the August 2016 Home Sales Report released by the Virginia Association of REALTORS® (VAR), residential real estate sales have rebounded strongly from a lagging July and are markedly higher than at this time last year. Year-to-date measures continue to outpace prior years and suggest sustained market strengthening. Volume through the end of August 2016 exceeded $25.941 billion, a gain of 6.8 percent from last year’s accumulation of $24.294 billion. “Particularly strong sales in Virginia’s densest regions fostered an August boom,” stated 2016 VAR President Bill White. “We are beginning…

We have witnessed the worst of America over the last few days. Violence, rioting, and looting has been occurring in Charlotte, N.C. This has been an ongoing trend across our great nation. The question is, why? The trigger to every one of these incidents has involved police officers and the death of, in many cases, an African American male. Whether it is an officer-involved shooting or attempting to transport a prisoner, all have led to mayhem on our city streets. Racism is a problem in our nation. Admitting that it exists is the beginning step in resolving it. Some believe…

By Josh Mathews Humans swim from conception. Babies are born knowing how to swim, but the skill is lost quickly after birth. It wasn’t lost that long in the case of Clark Beach and Ethan Beach. Swimming since age six has paid dividends for the Matoaca students and identical twins as they both committed to swim at the University of Florida this last week. The twins chose Florida over Alabama and Virginia Tech knowing it was their home as soon as they left the Gainesville campus after their visit. “The reason why we picked Florida is because they are a…

By Zach Long Thomas Dale 56, Colonial Heights 7 The Thomas Dale “Dark Zone” defense continues to impress in a 56-7 victory over Colonial Heights. The Knights only needed 39 snaps on offense to score 56 points, as the defense racked up three touchdowns. The Knights have scored 44 points on defense this season, more than the offenses of three teams in the area. Coach Kevin Tucker acknowledged just how important those kind of numbers are. “Give our defense all the credit in the world,” Tucker said. “We only had 39 snaps on offense tonight, and that just tells you…
Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. As most of you are aware, at some point time at work, or at a social event you will be approached by parent who shoves a pamphlet toward you peddling overpriced candy, cookies, or whatever to support their child’s school activities. Many times this is a tit-for-tat scheme, since you have at one time or another done same thing to them for your kid…so you are kind of obligated to return the favor. This round-robin event should end when your kids grow up, but unfortunately that is seldom the…
by Danielle Ozbat Thirty-one Korean War veterans were honored at the “We Remember Our Korean War Vets” banquet last week. Sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Chester, the event was held at St. John’s Episcopal Church and had veterans from the Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Marines. This is the second veterans event of its nature as 41 World War II veterans were honored at Chester Presbyterian Church and presented with medals last June. These events are the brainchild of Dr. Joseph C. Hillier, who founded the club in 1972 and plans…
