By Thomas Dozier Some people come into your life and you just know you will never be able to replace them if they left. Shedrick McCall III, a rising senior at L. C. Bird, knows this all too well. Spinning a clever twist on a common phrase, the Old Dominion Postcard Club (ODPCC) introduces its unique “House of Postcards” exhibit at the Chester library. Throughout the month of July, library patrons can peruse the club’s colorful postcard displays. The exhibit’s title, evoking the classic house of cards, works on a literal and a figurative level. Hoping to grab library visitors’ attention as they enter, the club members constructed an actual house of postcards, which stands seven feet tall. “As far as we know, it’s the first in the world,” ODPCC president, Mike Uzel, says. Additionally, the club has transformed…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. We here in the pack, hope you had a great three day weekend…as for me, I don’t know yet. I am typing this ahead of schedule since my play-date book has been pretty full the past four weeks. As I mentioned in my past article, I had the opportunity to attend the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, where we got to stand in lines for hours under a hot sun, and pay $30 for two brats sandwiches and soft drinks…but what are you going to do? Many of them have managed to dodge the layoffs and downsizing that larger papers have had to face. Chip Hutcheson, president of the National Newspaper Association (which represents more than 2,100 community newspaper companies), said, “You don’t hear about community papers going out of business. It’s not the doom and gloom that major market papers face. At a recent press association meeting, I met several people who say they started a (small) paper two or…

“Sometimes to go forward you’ve got to go to the depths of your own personal despair and claw yourself back,” former Scottish soccer player and manager Gordon Strachan once said. “From that point, no matter what happens, you know you can do it.” While there’s much work to be done to reach the ultimate goal, former L. C. Bird baseball standout (Class of 2011) Nick Conner achieved a part of his dream when he made his professional debut on Father’s Day for the short-season Class A Auburn Doubledays, a minor-league affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Conner entered the game in…
