Chesterfield County residents are invited to spend an evening outdoors with neighbors and police on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., for National Night Out, an annual event held across the country to strengthen neighborhood and police-community partnerships, while heightening crime- and drug-prevention awareness. The Chesterfield County Police Department recently held a kickoff event for this year’s National Night Out, and is looking for neighborhoods to register their parties this August. Gamma Nu, a chapter of the Pi Phi fraternity, fit the bill as an active civic organization that won numerous national awards for their charity, activities, and civic work. The third annual “Get Your Butts to Broadway” Festival in downtown Hopewell is right around the corner. Featuring some of the best backyard pork butt cookers in the region, this festival puts BBQ cookers to the test, unleashing the best butts known to man. Alice Robinson was nominated as an Outstanding Volunteer. She accumulated 1,194 hours after age 60, and she taught for 39 years. Ms. Robinson volunteers her time and talents with Chesterfield County Public Schools, where she helps struggling readers feel successful. At Curtis Elementary, she tutored individual first graders reading below grade level and set up a checkout system for books in the reading room. Now at Harrowgate Elementary, she continues individual tutoring with first graders. She schedules her physical therapy sessions around her volunteering schedule so as not to disappoint the children. To the Editor: I am writing this letter concerning the speed limit on West Hundred Road in both directions. The speed limit is 35mph not 55 or 60 mph. Why are you speeding every day? I see drivers of cars, pickup, FedEx, postal delivery and dump trucks as well as school buses speeding, also there is a work zone on Jefferson Davis Hwy past Lowe’s posted 35mph.
