Members of the Matoaca High School American Red Cross Club and their family and friends volunteered on Saturday, April 23, at the Virginia Home 5K Fun Walk. This is the seventh year the 5K Fun Walk has taken place and the MHS American Red Cross Club has volunteered each time. The Virginia Home is a private, non-profit that provides nursing, therapeutic and residential care to adult Virginians with irreversible disabilities. Carver Middle School’s seventh grade class, to promote healthy lifestyles and to associate fun with fitness, will offer its first annual “I’d Rather Be Crazy than Lazy Challenge” on May 11. Activities will include “Minute-To-Win-It” events, fitness and local history trivia, and 30 second “Road Block” exercises involving all areas of fitness. There is no cost (free for all ages.) Carver students and faculty ask that you please come out and join them for some crazy fun at Carver Middle School on Harrowgate Road, 3800 Cougar Trail, Chester,which will take place from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m.

Nathan Hoback has been named 2016 Matoaca High School Teacher of the Year. Mr. Hoback, a worthy recipient of this recognition is well known to students and faculty at Matoaca High School. Originally from Roanoke, Virginia, Mr. Hoback earned his undergraduate and Masters from William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He is certified to teach Spanish and Mathematics. The 2016 U.S. Olympic Fencing Team, on the evening of April 11, was escorted by the Greater Chester Knights and Salle Green Fencing Clubs onto the stage during a Richmond Convention Center event leading up the Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro. A three-time Olympian and founder of fencing in the Schools, Morehouse will hold assemblies at Elizabeth Davis to train PE teachers for after school fencing programs. A program with many college level athletics historically, Thomas Dale track added another notch to their belt when distance runner Michael Tres announced he will be running at Virginia Wesleyan. “After visiting and being able to meet with the team and coaches, it was a program athletically I felt would be able to fit in very well with,” said Tres. “It’s also a great academic school that I could attend for the next four years.” Tres has had a solid senior season so far, with conference, region and state meets on the horizon. Two Matoaca baseball alums received some of the highest individual honors this week for Randolph Macon. Senior Travis Lodge was named the Conference’s Player of the Year while sophomore Rick Spiers earned All-ODAC first team honors. Spiers picked up the Most Outstanding Player in the ODAC tournament just days later. A pair of senior leaders for L.C. Bird softball signed on the dotted line to continue their softball careers at Richard Bland College this past week, Kamryn Lanier and Ashley Fritz. Lanier, a third baseman and Fritz, a catcher are two key cogs for an L.C. Bird team that has shown great improvement over the past two seasons. Last year, they won their first round match-up in the Conference 12 tournament over Matoaca.
