Fast as a speeding bullet, Matoaca’s Jacorey Flood has burst off the starting block on the track and into collegiate pursuits. This past week, the Warrior signed his letter of intent to the track and field program at Stevenson University. “Great atmosphere, coaches and the players really welcomed me as an athlete,” said Flood. “The team is driven to get better day in and day out so it definitely was appealing to me as a college choice.” Stevenson University, located in Stevenson, Maryland, takes part in the Middle Atlantic Conference. Flood was also considering Christopher Newport and Roanoke College up…
L.C. Bird standout football player Isaiah Moore picked up his third offer this week from the Naval Academy. Moore has previously been offered a place by Army, ironically Navy’s biggest rival, and Old Dominion University. The linebacker has also visited several other colleges and should see more offers in the coming weeks. Alongside Virginia Tech commit Rayshard Ashby, the set of linebackers will be a feared duo heading into next season for the Skyhawks. This past year, Moore was named to the 5A South Second Team for his role in L.C. Bird’s formidable defense.
UNC guard and former L.C. Bird basketball star Kenny Williams underwent surgery last Thursday for a torn meniscus. The surgery came just three days after UNC lost in the National Championship to Villanova, a game in which Williams did not play. The sharpshooter averaged 4.1 minutes per game and scored 23 points on the year including a three pointer against Pittsburgh in the ACC Tournament. Williams will be out 6-8 weeks, but will return in time for preseason practices, looking to work himself into a larger role next year.
The road to success for Meadowbrook girls’ soccer has been a long one, and it is still an uphill climb. After a winless season last year, the Monarchs have already picked up two victories – shutting out Huguenot and Dinwiddie. “Every game is a step in the right direction for us,” said coach Joseph Farrell. “These girls endured some losses in the beginning of the season but never once have given up.” Success started to smile upon the program under former coach Ernst Chamberlain, who led Meadowbrook to four victories, snapping a losing streak that lasted nearly three seasons. After…
Sears Holdings which owns Kmart is revving up their efforts to shut 50 unprofitable stores including the Chester store on Jeffferson Davis Highway. In May of 2015, the Kmart in Colonial Heights closed. At this time, it is expected that the store will close in June with liquidation sales beginning this month. Sears is struggling as well, the chain’s same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, dropped 6.9 percent in the most recent quarter. They fell 7.2 percent at Kmart. According to “Business Insider,” Sears is now trying to stem the losses from underperforming stores by…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. I do not have any close neighbors: I can see them but it would take a good nine iron to hit their house from mine – not that I have actually tried that. But the point is I prefer to have some spitting distance. That has worked for nine years until my farming neighbor decided that he did not want the trees growing along his field and the property line that extends down from the road and across roughly 40 yards of my wooded lot that is located behind…
Opening day is always a big day for the Central Chesterfield Little League and their players. Brian Reed, CCLL president welcomed the 52 teams in the league along with team managers, coaching staff, team moms and their families that kept the yearly tradition and weathered the rain on Saturday during the opening ceremonies. The fun games and activities scheduled for the rest of the day had been dampened and most families left after the opening ceremonies. No pictures, no cake walk, no dunk tank, but a few did visit some of the sponsor booths before they packed up and picked…
Spring has sprung in Chester. Azaleas are bursting in color, Wisteria blooms are dangling from the tops of trees, tulips are popping up and gardeners are busy in their yards bringing life back in order. April is a busy time for gardeners as well as for members of garden clubs all over Virginia. The Chester Garden Club is not sitting still. Along with tending to their own gardens, members have been busy sprucing up the community’s public garden beds they tend to at the entrance sign of Chester and the corner of Harrowgate and West Hundred Roads.
