Legionella redux: Two board members grill Health Dept. officials, Coyner apologizes for it
0Legionella was a hot topic during last week’s Chesterfield school board meeting, with board members Rob Thompson and Javaid Siddiqi asking pointed questions of two state Department of Health officials. Thirteen county residents have been diagnosed with a disease caused by Legionella bacteria this year, a state Health Department official said, and bacteria was found in cooling towers at five area schools and a number of non-school locations, including Defense Supply Center Richmond, Ice Zone, Johnston-Willis Hospital and Reynolds Metal Co., over the summer. State epidemiologist Lillian Peake and Dr. Alexander Samuel, the county’s acting health director, spoke before the…
Gravely enjoys being a librarian at Carver C&CA
0Deanna Gravely When Deanna Gravely was a little girl, she wanted to be a teacher and had many influential cousins who were teachers. She would pretend to write on a chalkboard of her fictional classroom and line up her stuffed animals and dolls in a row as if they were sitting at their desks. Gravely started her career teaching English, but after finding the classroom too predictable, she became a librarian. Gravely has been in education for 20 years and has taught middle and high school. She said she enjoys teaching older students because she can joke around with them…

A pleasant surprise
0This firefighting crew represented Engine 1- C shift in Chester in 1998. From left, Pete Hypes, Wendy Owens, Angela Roddy, David Lewis and Rob McLean. Pictured is the original “War Wagon,” one of the best shifts that I had the privilege of working. However, the reason for the card is the little girl, Angela Roddy, is with us. This little girl lived close to the fire station and used to ride her bike by the fire station all of the time, but she did not have a bike helmet. One day, she was riding down the sidewalk on Route 10.…

0https://youtu.be/4W6IXOkBKb4 Continuing what has been a triumphant season so far, Matoaca High’s field hockey team has a 11-1 record after topping Colonial Heights in a 10-0 “mercy-rule” victory on Wednesday, Oct. 9. One of the big reasons for their overall success has been senior Annie Grace Louthan. Louthan is Matoaca’s vocal leader, but she also lets her stick do the talking. She scored her 100th goal against Hopewell on Oct. 2 and now sits at 108 goals with three games left in her senior season. (The Warriors faced Thomas Dale on Monday.) Louthan scored six of the team’s goals against…

0Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. As I have noted, my birthday is very near, and I got a very big and surprising birthday gift. My oldest daughter, Tina, flew in from Virginia to surprise me at work last Friday afternoon. I was shocked. I think the last time she was at my house was 15 years ago when she came to Indiana and we went to the Indianapolis 500. It was blistering hot that day, one of the hottest race days on record. In addition to the surprise visit, she also got me a…
