Crater District hiring new transportation director
0The Crater Commission announced that Ron Svejkovsky will be its new director of transportation planning. Svejkovsky, a Chester resident, is replacing David Hyder, who transitioned to an engineering firm located in Raleigh, N.C., after three years of service to the Tri-Cities Area Metropolitan Planning Organization. Svejkovsky will be responsible for overseeing the management of the Tri-Cities Area MPO, which provides oversight of transportation funding, as well as the preparation of studies that integrate all aspects of transportation planning. On Sunday, July 21, more than 850 participating TCC and Wireless Zone stores are teaming up to donate 187,000 backpacks full of school supplies to children through TCC’s annual School Rocks Backpack Giveaway. Between 1-4 p.m. on July 21, participating TCC stores are inviting local families to bring their children to the store to pick up a backpack filled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, glue and more. Horse camp
0Twenty-one students recently completed a Chesterfield County Parks and Rec horse camp at Hunter’s Lane Stables at 3578 Hunter Lane, south of Kingsland Road, west of Chester Road. The students learned to care for, groom and ride “hunt seat” on a variety of horses last month. Hunter’s Lane is a family-owned boarding and lesson stable operated by Elaine Wilson that has been hosting horse camps since 1984. Dillard gets offer from Chowan
0L.C. Bird High School boys basketball got some good news when Jaylen Dillard received a college offer after an outstanding season at a junior college. Dillard, a 6-foot 2-inch guard, received an offer from Division II Chowan, a Murfreesboro, N.C. school and member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. After his senior season and a state championship with the Skyhawks in 2017, Dillard pledged to Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte, but later transferred to Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville. Plummer is VN’s track athlete of the year
0It’s been well documented that L.C. Bird High School’s boys track program has sustained success at a very high level, with the Skyhawks having won two consecutive indoor and outdoor championships. On a deep and talented roster, coach Adam Canning highlighted rising junior Jacob Plummer. Among his other accomplishments, Plummer won a state championship in the 3200 meters this indoor season and was a member of the championship 4×800-meter relay team.
