Navy veteran gets assistance dog

Desert Storm veteran Kathy Tilbury and Koa. Chester resident Kathy Tilbury, U.S. Navy retired, recently received an assistance dog from Canine Companions for Independence. Tilbury was matched with Koa II, a 3-year-old lab/golden retriever cross who was trained to respond to over 40 commands. Koa can turn light switches on and off, open and close doors and retrieve dropped objects. However, one of his most important jobs will be to provide constant companionship. Firefighters were dispatched to 11800 Lewis Road on Monday, April 1, for a building on fire. Firefighters discovered smoke and fire coming from a recycling plant. The fire was declared under control at 12:52 p.m. No injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation. It was the second fire in that area in two months, as another fire was reported Feb. 6. Carlos Menjivar A 21-year-old man residing in the country illegally had firearms, ammunition and forgery charges withdrawn Feb. 21 by the Chesterfield commonwealth attorney’s office, with the case scheduled to be picked up by the U.S. attorney’s office. Carlos Maurice Azucar Menjivar was arrested Sept. 25 at the Moore’s Lake area off Jefferson Davis Highway. A blue Chevrolet sport utility vehicle that he was driving displayed a tag in the windshield that belonged to an Acura owned by a woman, a court document states. Canadian dies after being struck by truck

A 40-year-old Ontario, Canada, man died Friday, April 5, after he was struck by a pickup while crossing in the 2400 block of West Hundred Road between Sunoco and Exxon gas stations. According to the Chesterfield County Police Department, the man – Lance A.M. Owl – was struck around 11:30 p.m. by a red pickup truck that was traveling westbound. Witnesses attempted CPR immediately. The man was transported to a local medical facility where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the pickup truck remained on scene.

Dominion retired two Chester units

Dominion Energy recently announced that it retired two units at the Chesterfield Power Station. “We had placed these units into cold reserve last year,” Dominion spokesman Dan Genest said, noting the units were placed into the environmentally-safe shut-down status because they were older, smaller, less efficient units that the utility said could not compete with natural gas and solar alternatives. Retiring the units means they cannot be brought back into service. “We decided to retire them now because we did not foresee the energy market changing,” he said. “There were no implications for employees as a result of the retirements.…

Snake salesman? Miller charged after eight rattlesnakes found in his residence

A Chesterfield resident has been charged with snake possession. Matthew R. Miller was recently issued nine summonses charging him with possessing a wild or exotic animal – all misdemeanors – in violation of county code. The summonses were dated March 25. He is scheduled to be in Chesterfield General District Court at 9 a.m. June 12. County animal services director Carrie Jones said Matthew R. Miller, 44, of the 3600 block of Thurston Road, reportedly had nine western diamondback rattlesnakes, but only eight were found after a warrant was issued.
