Cleaning dishes
0Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. I think I made a little boo-boo with my new dishwasher. It does a great job of cleaning. That is not the issue; it’s the design. Now I admit I picked it out, but I was not really paying attention to one essential feature. After it was installed, I called my handyman and told him he made a mistake. The issue is that I have a very nice stainless-steel front on the dishwasher that matches my stove and refrigerator. That means the controls are in the top of the…

When the stick goes up
0According to an old firefighters’ saying, “when the stick goes up, the building comes down.” The stick refers to the aerial ladder, which is the big ladder on the top of a ladder truck. One method of fire attack is by elevated master stream, which involves an engine supplying an aerial ladder with water unless the truck has its own pump. Last week, a fire at a Harrisonburg apartment complex required two elevated master streams in order to stop the fire in the building of origin. The cause of the fire was determined to be improperly discarded smoking materials. The…
Review: Swift Creek Mill spring musical well worth it
0Olivia Mullins as Margo and Ian Page as Billy Cane in ‘Bright Star,’ playing at 17401 Jefferson Davis Highway. (Photo by Robyn O’Neill) I don’t know if “Bright Star” would play well in Peoria, but I have an idea that central Illinois residents would love it. The musical – which is based on the life of William Helms, a 5-day-old baby who was tossed from a train in a small valise in 1902 and survived, a sort of a modern-day Moses – is showing on Fridays, Saturdays and select Thursdays at Swift Creek Mill Theatre through May 11. I watched…
Gifted education in Chesterfield
0I believe my child may be identified as gifted. Where will he go? Does my school offer programs for this? The short answer is yes. Chesterfield County schools have gifted programs on each campus to provide a challenge for gifted students. Each year beginning in second grade, a child has the option to be tested and provided with a Gifted Education Eligibility Report (GEER) score. This uses teacher scores, grades, test scores and parental scores to identify children’s gifted abilities in each eligible subject. This information will help the county place a child in the best environment to suit and…
Pickleball is game of choice among many seniors
0Jared Dieffenbach and Kevin Sutton play Friday, March 29. If you ever find yourself in a pickle, you might just be having fun. A group of 33 or so mostly senior citizens regularly join to play pickleball. The game was invented on Bainbridge Island west of Seattle in 1965 and has begun to catch on locally, said Chester resident Daryle Hurt, who helped organize pickleball games at his church, Swift Creek Baptist, five years ago. The game – which features a paddle made of graphite, fiberglass or a composite material and a ball similar to a wiffle ball – has…
Patriotic endeavor: Smiths have big plans for Unity Park
2A park will be developed near where a 212-foot tall U.S. flag is flying on Coxendale Road near Interstate 95 and Route 288, according to Richard Smith. Richard and Monique Smith have big plans for their 70-acre property north of Coxendale Road. The couple – who own seven construction, demolition and recycling businesses in Chester – plan to build on the land surrounding the 40-foot by 76-foot U.S. flag they installed there late last year. Unity Park, as it will be known, will include a 5,000-square-foot steel and glass building that will be used as an educational venue for fifth-grade…
Paint Out Pollution event decorates storm sewers
0Kevin Orlosky paints a monarch butterfly. They weren’t exactly painting the town red, but it was a colorful endeavor nonetheless. Chesterfield County joined with Art on Wheels and the James River Association for a “Paint Out Pollution” event last week, which involved painting storm drain covers. Kevin Orlosky, founder and program director of Art on Wheels, said he used a laser to cut out stencils based on renderings from artists in the Richmond region. Art included a monarch butterfly, beaver, mink, bald eagle, great blue heron, northern water snake, mallard and Prothonotary warbler. On Wednesday morning, March 27, eight people…
