Resident and firefighter injured in Chester fire

One resident was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, and a firefighter was transported with minor injuries after a fire at 15315 Happy Hill Road on Saturday, March 30. Fire and medical personnel were dispatched at 5:20 p.m. for a report of a house fire, chief deputy fire marshal Salvatore Luciano said. Units arrived on scene to find a one-story, single-family house with smoke and fire showing. The fire was extinguished and marked under control at 5:37 p.m., Luciano said. Woman charged with arson

A Chesterfield Fire Marshal and county police arrested Chester resident Staci D. Austin, 46, on March 29 and charged her with one count of arson for a March 17 two-alarm fire at Interstate Inn in the 2100 block of Indian Hill Road. Austin is being held at the Chesterfield County Jail. One person suffered life-threatening injuries, and three county police officers who suffered smoke inhalation were transported to a hospital. Man charged with involuntary manslaughter

The driver of a dump truck involved in a fatal crash that occurred in the 17200 block of Genito Road on Feb. 13, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in relation to the incident. Samuel M. Allebaugh II, 57, of the 3200 block of Tanners Way, turned himself in March 28 after police obtained a warrant the same day. Police said a 1999 Ford F-Series dump truck was traveling on Genito Road when it went partially off the road, the driver overcorrected, and crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a 2009 Honda Accord. Chester Lions Club member Ralph Jones recently presented Carrie Coyner with a photograph of her mentor, “Skitch,” which was taken in 1977 at a Chester Lions Club Variety Show. Coyner, a Chesterfield School Board member since 2011 and House of Delegates candidate, spoke to the Lions Club recently. She grew up in the Enon area, and after college began a real estate law practice with her mentor and partner, Oliver D. Rudy, aka Skitch. Rudy was president of the Chester Lions in 1970 and director of the Lions Club Variety Show for many years.

County and school leaders criticized during budget hearing; Recycling options also discussed

County supervisors got an earful during last week’s public hearing on the proposed budget. Several speakers criticized the school district for not cutting enough, while others asked for more funding for teachers’ salaries in addition to the 3 percent included in the proposed Fiscal Year 2020 budget. Midlothian resident Ron Hayes said the board of supervisors has not underfunded schools, and schools have not scrubbed their budget. He criticized the school district for funding swimming, rowing and lacrosse sports programs instead of putting a nurse in every school.
