Softball: A more experienced Lady Warriors team shows improvement early on

0

Matoaca High School softball has long been a proud program, but the team experienced a dip last season, won just six games and qualified for the postseason as the No. 8 seed, falling to top-ranked Atlee. “We are an older team, but we have some players in new positions this year,” coach Scott Driskill said. Gone is pitcher Katie Higgins, who had a standout career. Senior Paige Berberette will step into the circle as the Warriors’ primary pitcher. Sophomore Rylee Franklin and freshman Brianna Branch are also expected to throw. Sophomore Hailey Hengle will finish out the battery at catcher.…

It’s getting ridiculous

As I read a gut-wrenching Facebook post from the wife of Lt. Brad Clark, the firefighter who lost his life on I-295, I can only say that little has changed. The #MoveOver campaign – created to get the word out about moving over when you see police vehicles – ambulances or fire apparatus on the shoulder of a road, must not be a flash in the pan. We cannot allow Clark’s death and the deaths of others to have been for naught. If you drive a motor vehicle, then you are responsible for your actions behind the wheel. I understand…

Dogpound mornings

0

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Have you adjusted to Daylight Saving Time yet? I have, but I do not like it. Just before the change, I was actually able to see the start of the sunrise. Now it is just pitch black again. Many times I will get an email from a friend telling me about how pretty the sunrise was that morning, and all I can do is go “Ppffftttt!” Anyway, speaking of mornings, I go through my weekly routine like clock-work. Get up, stumble to the bathroom, shower, shave, dress, eat my…

Chargers, Camaros, pickup trucks, roadsters, ’57 Chevys and others can be found at cruise-ins hosted by the Oldies But Goodies Classic Cruizers car club. Cruise-ins are held the first Saturday of the month until September, with the first scheduled April 6 at the Keystone Tractor Museum, 880 W. Roslyn Road in Colonial Heights. Money earned from the cruise-ins and special events goes to wounded veterans, club president Bruce Vecchioni said. “Once a year, we have a special event at the Beacon Theatre (in Hopewell) and present the money directly to the veterans,” he said. “Their faces just light up. They…

Information leak: County begins long process to add fourth water source

0

This location at 1600 Ashton Park Drive in southeast Chesterfield could be where a new water treatment plant is located. The Chesterfield Board of Supervisors last week unanimously authorized the county to begin the designing and permitting process to add a water treatment facility on the Appomattox River. County staff believes that a fourth water source – in addition to Swift Creek Reservoir, Lake Chesdin and the James River – would provide additional flexibility to meet long-term water demands as the county continues to grow. At an estimated cost of $121 million, another water treatment plant would initially provide 10…
