Valentine’s Day
0Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Let’s spend a minute or two talking about that over-commercialized holiday which is just around the corner. You know the one, the one that has been on the store shelves since Christmas, as if you could really forget: Valentine’s Day! This year I think you should look at changing things up a bit. I mean, you can do the candy, flowers, and postcard thing, but I would like to suggest another way. It is a four-letter word…no, not the word you are thinking of right now (love), the word…
Six Warriors sign to play football at the next level
0Manny Hickman was one of the most heavily recruited football players in Matoaca High School history, racking up over 37 FBS and FCS offers. The senior originally committed to Cincinnati, decommitted, got more offers and eventually decided on East Carolina, where he’ll play with teammate Jonathan Coleman and Thomas Dale High School’s Rick D’Abreu. At 6-2, 245, Hickman was a force at defensive end. He accumulated 50 tackles (13 for a loss of yardage) and six sacks, recovered four fumbles, forced a fumble, broke up a pass and scored a defensive touchdown. “[Hickman] is one of the best payers we…

Crawl space fires
0The area under your house is called the crawl space, since in most cases you cannot walk upright, but must crawl. If it is a livable space, then it is called a basement. The crawl space is usually where the water and drain pipes and wiring runs and where the air handler for your HVAC is found. I have been in some crawl spaces where my belly is tight to the ground and my back is rubbing the floor joists. There is nothing good about fires in this space. A malfunction with electrical wiring or mechanical equipment under a house…

Battle over Confederate flagpole: County board affirms zoning violation
9Deputy county attorney Rob Robinson speaks about the case before the Chesterfield Board of Zoning Appeals last week. The owners of a small piece of land that houses a Confederate battle flag next to Interstate 95 lost a battle last week. Church Road resident Catherine H. Hendricks purchased the land at 2501 Old Bermuda Hundred Road from James and Barbara Eaton last year. Hendricks and the Virginia Flaggers were issued a notice of zoning violation Oct. 31. The Chesterfield Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously affirmed the violation notice at the end of a Feb. 6 hearing. Deputy county attorney Rob…
‘Progressive’ moves underway: Miles details policies that commonwealth attorney’s office has implemented
0Chesterfield’s Commonwealth Attorney Scott Miles in his office. After two and a half months on the job, Chesterfield’s Commonwealth Attorney Scott Miles believes progress is being made. Democrat Miles, who won a close race over Republican John Childrey in November to finish the final 13 1/2 months of Billy Davenport’s term, was sworn in Nov. 13. Several changes that he touted during the campaign have been made, although it seems likely that he will not be able to accomplish one having to do with increasing treatment options by the time the November election rolls around. Stacey Davenport, a Republican not…
