New parks director starts at his post
0Following a nationwide recruitment, Chesterfield County announced Robert Smet as its new director of Parks and Recreation. Smet, who served as the county’s assistant director of Parks and Recreation, began new role effective Oct. 1. He will replace James Worsley, who in August was appointed deputy county administrator for Human Services by the Board of Supervisors. With more than 25 years of management experience across various industries, Smet joined the Department of Parks and Recreation in 2012. As manager of the Rockwood Nature Center, he increased the center’s revenues by nearly 300 percent while greatly expanding the range of programs offered…
Thomas Dale’s Lewis adds 2nd D-II offer
0A star on the court for Thomas Dale, guard Kylon Lewis registered his second college offer this past week when Concord University extended it. At 6-4 and 170 pounds, Lewis was phenomenal for the Knights during the 2019-20 season. His talent helped the team to its first regional title in 19 years and a state tournament appearance. Lewis averaged 15.9 points and 3.1 assists per game. Lewis was also on the 2018-19 Knights team that won just five games. His play and development on the court helped drive Dale to 20 wins in 2019-20. During the team’s run to the…
Despite COVID challenges, Healy starts building at MBK
0When Kevin Healy took the football coaching job at Meadowbrook this year, he knew he’d be in for a challenge. After two months on the job, COVID-19 hit, pushing practices, workouts, and the season back. Despite that, there’s light at the end of the tunnel for a program which has faced many challenges. “The program is in a full rebuild,” Healy said. “We are teaching the basics in the weight room, in accountability. We are re-teaching the kids on how to compete.” The program is in the throes of a 21-game losing streak. After coach Adam Tiller left the program,…

Fire prevention week
0October 4-10, 2020 is Fire Prevention Week, which commemorates the Great Chicago Fire. That fire occurred Oct. 8, 1871, killing 250 people, leaving 100,000 people homeless, destroying 17,400 structures, and burning 2,000 acres. This year’s theme is “Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.” Cooking, unattended or not is the No.1 cause of residential fires in America. When I left the job in 2010, 3.7 out of every 10 fires in Chesterfield County were caused by cooking. Interestingly, we talk about this issue more, but the statistic remains high. When you put all of the right ingredients for a fire…

Growing Older
0Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. I am pleased to announce that I have made another trip around the big yellow ball in the sky that we call the sun. Even though we know that it takes the same amount of time to go around in a big circle, it just seems to be going faster and faster the older I get. Maybe it feels that way because I can see the end of the road much clearer than the beginning of this journey. With that being said, you also look at all the things…
Young Chester resident finds a way to help
0Thousands of cars travel back and forth on Iron Bridge Road each day. If it is a Friday afternoon there you will witness a long line of cars waiting at the entrance of the Chesterfield Food Bank, where they will pick up bags of food to get through the week. Sometimes the line of cars reaches as far as a mile. The Marr family, which lives near the food bank, sees it each Friday. The long lines had an impact on 11-year-old, Gabriel, who goes by Gabe. When challenged by a leadership training program created by his pastor, Garrett Oppel…
