Matoaca Canine Companion Dog Retires
0Matoaca High School’s canine companion dog, Zach, marked his last official day of work last week after six-and-a half years of faithful service. In his honor the Exceptional Education Department held a retirement party with food, photos, hugs and farewell messages for Zach from faculty and students as he heads off for a much deserved retirement. Zach was placed with Ms. Penny Edwards, a Matoaca High School faculty member in 2008 by Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) a national nonprofit organization that enhances the lives of children and adults with disabilities by providing highly-trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to…
Dogpound Is a Good Sport
0Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. I am kind of in the dog pound myself, since I appear to be late for this week’s column. I had bookend “weekend” football games for my birthday, one college and one professional, so I am pretty sure I wrote an extra article, but the Master says not so. However, just between the pack and me, the Master has had to eat his words in the past, maybe he is a bit hungry this week? Wink! I enjoy both types of games, but I just think the college games…
Village News Sports Top 5: Week 7
01. L.C. Bird 7-0 Cosby kept things interesting for a while in this game scoreboard wise, but were never really that close to scratching the armor of L.C. Bird. The Titans do get a feather in their cap for trailing by two scores deep into the fourth quarter, and for also, scoring on the vaunted Skyhawks first team defense. Otherwise, the game was business-as-usual for the Skyhawks who should cruise into the postseason with a 10-0 record with three extremely winnable games in George Wythe, Huguenot and James River. They should also cruise to the top seed in the 5A…

State of the James River
0Beginning in 2007, the James River Association started compiling key health indicators for its State of the James River report. We have released an updated report every two years since. I am pleased to report that for the first time, this year’s State of the James report gives the James River’s health a grade in the “B” range with an overall score of 61 percent, up four points from two years ago. Having the grade move into the “B” range is nothing short of remarkable and a major milestone for the health of the James River. In this 40th anniversary…
Slow Down for Deer This Time of Year
0Autumn is here, and along with colorful leaves, crisp air, and shorter days, it means Virginia’s white-tailed deer will be on the move. With daylight savings time just around the corner, many motorists will be commuting in the dark, increasing the likelihood of their vehicle colliding with a deer. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) is encouraging Virginia’s drivers to be more cautious as they travel the Commonwealth’s highways this season. Fall is the breeding season for deer, and consequently, deer are more active now than at any other time of the year. One-half to two-thirds of…
Heroic acts recognized at awards ceremony
0Chesterfield Fire and EMS on Oct. 6 recognized many of its members for heroic acts performed in the line of duty, but something unique and rare also took place, three Chesterfield citizens received Medals of Valor for acts of heroism in saving a life. A Medal of Valor is rarely presented. To earn this award the life of the rescuer has to be on the line, while performing the rescue. The ceremony began with David Tesh as Master of Ceremonies, the Presentation of Colors, invocation by Chaplain Ronald S. Woody, then comments followed by The Honorable Steve Elswick, Chairman of…
