Mother’s Day at a distance

0

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Unless things change very quickly in the next few days, Mother’s Day is going to be one for the history books. A day when we celebrate all that Mom has done for us, and we are forced to do it apart; looking through a glass door or waving at each other as the car drives slowly past the house. I understand the need for precaution, but at the same time if everyone is in good health, mask with gloves in place, and for good measure everyone is hosed down…

Utility rate increase nixed, revised budget approved

0

By Caleb M. Soptelean A planned increase in utility rates went down the drain last week as a result of the impact of the coronavirus. The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to keep utility fees the same in Fiscal Year 2021, which starts July 1. They also unanimously approved a revised budget of $723.6 million, which is almost $50 million less than the original proposal. “Kudos to [deputy county administrator Matt Harris] and the entire budget team,” board chairwoman Leslie Haley said during the April 21 virtual meeting. “They started over from almost square one.” She also noted…

Originally published in Village News Sept. 3, 1998 By Laura Davimes It is the end of another hot summer’s day – about 7 p.m., and one of Chester’s working citizens is calling it a day. For Bert Shoosmith work started about 8:00 a.m. with paperwork and other office duties. Following the 9 a.m. Arrival of his small staff, Bert moves outdoors, watering the large containers in the field, moving on to check for new growth on some recently re-potted camellias, and pruning dozens of azaleas. Changing seasons

I have to start this on April 6, 1996. I was on duty at Fire Station No. 2, and it was spitting snow that day. The phone ringing at a fire station was as normal as going to the store for meals. This day would change my life forever. The phone rang, and I heard on the speaker that I had a phone call. It was my battalion chief, who had told the firefighter who had answered the call to stay close to me, as he delivered the message. His message was that something had happened to my father and that…
