Revised budget presented, tax rates approved
0Nearly $50M, hikes in salary cut from original It was a virtual meeting with each of the supervisors in a different location. On April 8, the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors heard a revised budget presentation from deputy county administrator Matt Harris. The board approved 2020 real estate and personal property tax rates, which are the same as those of 2019. Harris said that county staff took a holistic approach to the budget revisions brought on by the impact to the economy from COVID-19. The revised Fiscal Year 2020-21 General Fund budget — which the supervisors will vote on April…
Parks and Rec takes additional measure to protect park users
0The Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation Department will be implementing additional efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in its park system, while protecting the health of county residents and employees. The department has implemented several protective measures in parks, such as removing goals and nets from basketball and tennis courts.Effective Tuesday, April 7, all public restrooms will be closed. The closures include permanent restrooms as well as portable toilets. Closure of the county’s restroom facilities is being made out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of park patrons and staff. While county parks remain open, many amenities…
A moratorium is needed on zoning cases during the COVID-19 shutdown
0To the Editor: I believe we can all agree that we are in the midst of an unprecedented crisis. People are deeply concerned about jobs, paychecks, kids out of school, and putting food on the table, getting sick, and loved ones dying. This is not the time for zoning cases to be pushed through the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors meetings without proper PUBLIC citizen comment. While the Public is completely occupied by the COVID-19 Corona emergency, Zoning Cases, including the huge Courthouse Landing case, are poised to progress through the Planning Commission and/or Board of Supervisors without proper…

Common causes
0Two different fires occurred this past week in Chesterfield, with common causes. In last week’s article, I wrote about the potential increase in the number of residential fires due to people being home more than ever. The causes of these two fires were ones of which that I have written many times in the past. If the chances of a fire occurring are greater, then we need to look at the most common causes and do everything to keep those kinds of fires from occurring. The most common causes of residential fires are unattended cooking, combustibles placed too close to…

Let there be light
0Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Before I get started, I need to wish everyone a very happy Easter. It is indeed going to be a strange Easter, since, as of this writing, we may still be under the social distancing (stay away from everyone) guidelines. Despite that lingering prospect, we can and should enjoy and give thanks for the blessing this religious holiday represents. We can still hunt eggs and baskets in place and give thanks around the Easter dinner table. OK, so, what else can I share with the pack today? Oh yes!…
