Max Loses Weight
0Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. I am pretty proud of myself right now; I have managed to lose some weight and keep it off …at least till winter comes back around. For now, I will enjoy my slimmer looks. Along with the thinner lines I have been able to find some clothes in my closet that I can wear again without feeling like I have a boa constrictor around my middle. However, despite the new wardrobe, I discovered that there can be some drawbacks to losing weight. The other day I grabbed a pair…
To da Beach
0The kids are out of school and vacation season has official begun. Pack the minivan, start your engines, and see who owns the checkered flag at the Wright Memorial Bridge. Over the weekend, as we experienced scorching temperatures, I was thinking about how ocean breezes would cut the “feels like” temperatures to bearable. Just think walks on the beach, watching the ocean, snoozing under an umbrella (no sunburns for me) and breakfast at Nags Head Pier Restaurant. No worries about tourism at any of the barrier islands. Seriously, do you know anyone who does not like the beach? The only…
Grassroots effort sends Chase to the general election
0In a runaway victory last Tuesday in the 11th Senatorial District, Amanda Chase took down incumbent Steve Martin and Barry Moore. Both Ms. Chase and Mr. Moore were running for office for the first time. Chase overwhelmed Martin who held the Virginia Senate seat since he won the Senate position in a special election in 1994. Chase convinced voters that it was time for Martin to go. She beat Martin by over 1,000 votes in what was considered a low turnout election. Chase garnered 4,468 votes, Martin received 3,417 votes and Moore grabbed 2,691. A grassroots campaign brought Chase small…

According to local historian Jack Bantle who will present the lecture, “Joshua Chamberlain was a college professor in Maine with no military training when he volunteered during the Civil War for the Union Army. He reached the rank of Brigadier General and was awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery at Gettysburg.” At the surrender ceremony for the infantry of Robert E. Lee’s Army at Appomattox Court…
Shark!
0As my family gears up for our annual pilgrimage to the beach, I am frightened to see these stories about the shark attacks occurring off of the Carolina coast. The two that occurred on Sunday are only 30 miles south of our little slice of heaven, Kure Beach. I am not sure what I will do, but I do know that I detest the fearful feeling I will have now when approaching the water. As you may remember, I grew up going to my grandparent’s house in the summers, and they happened to live at the beach. My cousin, brother,…

0The Third Thursday concert on June 18 on the Village Green (presented by the Chester Community Association (CCA) will feature Blues Flash, a blues band that plays venues across the region and the state. The band has been together for 10 years, and with its five members cover songs by the blues kings of the U.S. Blues Flash enjoys playing tunes described by its vocalist and harmonic-player, John Howe, as West Coast Jump, a swing blues that has become popular with shaggers.
