McCargo to Ferrum

Senior Alexis McCargo, a standout defender and most talented L.C. Bird girls’ soccer athlete, made her college decision last week. The Skyhawk will take her talents west to Rocky Mount and play for Ferrum College. “When I visited Ferrum, I felt like I was a part of their family,” McCargo said. “Ferrum has a very well organized program where the coaches want their student-athletes to succeed on and off the field.” McCargo reeled in Second Team All-Conference with 12 honors last year as defender for a L.C. Bird program that has struggled with building a winner at a school known…

Thomas Dale’s first season of lacrosse was a success. Both the boys and girls teams were formed from the bottom up and both had success as teams, coupled with many individual successes. This year, it’s for real, these games count. 2015 marks the first season that the Knights will play Virginia High School League lacrosse and excitement has come with that accomplishment. “It’s starting to be talked about like any other sport,” said Latzi Ballint, a senior midfielder and team captain. “We’re not just playing in some park, we’re playing under the lights with our school’s name on our chests.”…

Lady Skyhawks fall in state final

A proud program, L.C. Bird girls’ basketball was victorious over Thomas Edison to play in their first state title game. While the first half was a roaring success for the Skyhawks, they would fall just short of the ultimate goal, losing to Princess Anne 71-65 in the 5A State Final in what perhaps was the best season in school history. “We came out strong in the first half,” said L.C. Bird coach Chevette Waller. “We didn’t take care of the basketball and made too many turnovers.” The Skyhawks came out of the gate in full flight, hitting their shots and…

Monacan to State Final, Another battle with Midlothian looms

0

It almost seemed like destiny. As things stood Thursday morning, both the Monacan Chiefs and Midlothian Trojans were one game away from playing for the state championship. The catch? If they won, they’d play each other- for the fifth time. With Midlothian’s dramatic win earlier in the day, Monacan followed suite and set up round five with a gut-it-out 58-57 victory over William Fleming this afternoon at the Siegel Center. In a game where it looked like a much quicker and more athletic team would run them into the ground, William Fleming charged back in the second half to make…
