Leading through it all

I have just returned from South Africa, where I led a team of six, including myself, through the journey. In many ways, this trip was easy because we went to a place that I had been many times before. My team was made up of two that had been before and four that had not. Our pre-trip planning was as much about sharing what they should expect as it was in training them about their task. I had one new team member tell me, while we were there, that I had done a good job preparing them for this journey. I…

By Luke Krausse Shamus Jones- linebacker/wide receiver Shamus Jones Shamus Jones, a defensive and offensive standout at Thomas Dale, has received an invitation to play in the 2021 Hawaii Tiki Bowl Senior All-Star Game this coming winter. “Shamus is a tall and athletic LB/WR, [who] has been a two year starter on varsity,” Coach Kevin Tucker said. Jones is a 6-2, 190-pound junior who totaled 7 receptions and 110 receiving yards last season in his limited time on offense. However, he starred on Dale’s defense. “He has steadily improved his defensive game play and developed into a D1 linebacker,”…

Sick or scared?

Hello and welcome back to the Dogpound, where, if you are not sick, you are scared, and maybe you might be both. Please do not get me wrong, I am not dismissing the virus, but since I was a pup, we have always heard warnings about the yearly flu season, how we needed to be careful this winter season, and how the shots we got for the last flu bug will no longer protect us from the current flu bug that was making its rounds. This is how crazy it is getting. The leading news topic was that we reported…

Trey & Ashley Grant Grant Coffee Company opens in Chester When Trey and Ashley Grant were brainstorming ideas on what type of business they wanted to open, their options were restaurant, gym and coffee shop. The couple chose the latter and opened Grant Coffee Company in the village of Chester last month. Ashley said when they were discussing things they couldn’t live without the most and broke it down further to where their two children will be successful in the future, they learned coffee has specific steps. This plays into the field she’s currently working in (she is the Intellectual…

County selects contractor to rewrite zoning ordinance

0

The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors last week approved a contract for up to $1.01 million for a company to update the zoning ordinance. On March 11, the supervisors hired White and Smith LLC to develop a new ordinance and implement an online ordinance tool. That part of the contract totals $794,628. However, the company can earn an additional $216,280 to produce an in-house charrette, a public charrette and upgrades to the online ordinance tool. A charrette is a collaborative planning and design session. According to the staff report, much of the county’s current zoning ordinance is from 1997 and…

Gifted programs coming to two Bermuda schools

0

By a 4-1 vote with Matoaca board member Ryan Harter dissenting, the Chesterfield County Public Schools board on March 10 approved an expansion of the Center-Based Gifted Program to Carver and Elizabeth Davis middle schools. Gifted middle school students in the Bermuda District currently attend Matoaca Middle School. The expansion had been put off for two years. Several parents — including Lisa Blevins, Lucas Hill and former board member Carrie Coyner — spoke during public comment in favor of the expansion, although Bermuda resident Melinda Allio and former board member Rob Thompson of Matoaca spoke against it, with Allio asking…
