Hello and welcome back from the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Is it Easter yet? Easter is about 6 weeks away, but according to my local Walmart, it is already here. Nothing new about that, but I just wanted to point that that out. What else is new? Well, with the weather starting to warm up, birds are starting to return, and the blackbirds are back in force. I watch them in amazement; the flocks have so many birds. I mean, there literally has to be thousands of them, maybe millions! I have watched them fly across the sky for…

Hauler’s replacement up in the air; McQuinn, Aird don’t support consensus picks

Although eight of 10 members of Chesterfield County’s delegation in the General Assembly reached an apparent consensus in January on the nomination of a replacement for Circuit Court Judge T.J. Hauler, two state delegates who did not participate in the process may thwart the majority. According to a Feb. 24 report in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Dels. Dolores McQuinn (D-Richmond) and Lashrecse Aird (D-Petersburg) support two black persons for positions on the Chesterfield Circuit and Juvenile and Domestic Relations courts, Chesterfield General District Court Judge Pamela O’Berry and private attorney Curtis Hairston. McQuinn told the daily that she is “deeply concerned…

School board approves FY ‘21 budget; includes 2% teacher pay raise

Although they weren’t happy about it, the Chesterfield County Public Schools board unanimously approved a $726.9 million operating fund request for Fiscal Year 2020-21 during a special meeting on Feb. 25. The proposed financial plan was reduced from Superintendent Merv Daugherty’s initial request in January of $777.3 million. The $726.9 request — which would need to be approved by the county board of supervisors — reflects a $55.5 million, or 7.5-percent, increase, over the Fiscal Year 2019-20 adopted budget. Thomas Taylor, the school district’s deputy superintendent, said that the 2-percent increases for faculty and staff that would be allowed under…

Dale to face Massaponax on Friday at Cosby in first round of state tourney Thomas Dale boys basketball has done the improbable all season. But, they’ve accomplished all of their feats through good team basketball and fundamentals. Junior Kylon Lewis hit two free throws with two seconds left in overtime to give Thomas Dale a 73-71 lead, and a Western Branch 60-foot desperation shot clanged off the rim to give Dale the 6A Region Championship, the school’s first since 2001. “The first buy in was getting back to the basics,” said Thomas Dale head coach Keyode Rogers. “Back when we…

LITTLE BIG SHOTS WITH MELISSA MCCARTHY — Episode 401 — Pictured: (l-r) Bailey, Melissa McCarthy — (Photo by: Flannery Underwood/NBC) By Marly Fuller Parents have a great responsibility. They can either force their beliefs and desires for who they want their children to be, pushing them into an existence of their creation, or they can accept and nurture their children as they are and watch how beautiful it is to see a child live in their authenticity.  Bryan and Nancy Sheetz knew their youngest son, Bailey, was unique when he shied away from traditional kids’ toys. Instead of telling him…

County approves $15 annual increase for recycling

0

The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors approved an annual increase in the curbside recycling fee during their Feb. 19 meeting. The action came as part of the consent agenda and will result in an annual fee of $40. It will go into effect June 5. The old rate was $25 a year. Clay Bowles, the county’s director of general services, said that the $15 annual increase takes into account an expected 3-percent decline in enrollment. It also factors in annual increases of two percent in the Consumer Price Index. The county recycles over 14,000 tons a year, Bowles said. Utility…
