School board approves new calendar over objections to religious holidays

0

Although a number of locals don’t agree with giving employees and students specific religious holidays off, the Chesterfield school board last week approved a new calendar for the 2020-2021 school year incorporating some new ones. The 2020-2021 calendar adds Yom Kippur, Sept. 28, Good Friday, April 2, 2021, and Eid al Fatr (end of Ramadan), May 13, 2021. These are Jewish, Christian and Muslim holidays. May 13, 2021 is also marked as Ascension Day by some Christian communities, although it is not clear that the school district recognized it as such. During public comment at the Feb. 11 meeting, Rebecca…

Recently, two L.C. Bird alums reached the 1,000 point plateau during their respective college careers. Those athletes were guard Malik Johnson, who attends Canisius, and forward Keke Williams who is a student-athlete at St. Augustine University. Malik Johnson Johnson started his high school career at L.C. Bird, but transferred to Blue Ridge School. The speedy guard has been a constant force for the Golden Griffins since his arrival. In each of his four seasons, he’s increased his output in all major statistics- points scored, rebounds, assists and steals. Though 25 games in his senior season, he’s filling the stat sheet…

‘Ubuntu’ draws Knights closer, nets big results

0

What makes a team that won five games last season win 17 games a year later with nearly the same personnel? One word: “Ubuntu.” When Thomas Dale hired coach Keyode Rogers last June, athletic director Ricky Talman knew that a culture change was needed. That’s exactly what the Knights got, and so much more. “Ubuntu” is a African proverb that simply means “humanity.” It is most often translated as “I am because we are.” Rogers discovered the phrase back in his early coaching days, when he coached girls’ soccer in Orange County. It was a phrase then used by Lynchburg…

By Luke Krausse Tyler Henderson, LC Bird Tyler Henderson has developed into a leader on a 16-win L.C. Bird team. The lone senior on the roster and the team’s point guard, the 5-9 standout scores well and is just as good at distributing the ball. “Tyler has been consistent, and [he] has been our leader all season.” said Bird coach Troy Manns. “He continues to put us in positions to be successful, and has excellent execution throughout the games and [notably with] the three-point shots.” Manns is looking forward to a long postseason run with his point guard, and he…

Coach Glenna Lewis has 20 wins and a core of seniors that have the student body excited to see what the postseason may bring. “This year has been amazing,” Lewis said. “We have tried to keep our heads down and keep pushing. The first time we even brought up our record was after we defeated Petersburg to end the regular season.” Aliza Armstead Lewis’ core of five seniors is Jordan Carpenter, Alize…

By Del. Carrie Coyner The Virginia General Assembly has reached the halfway point of the 2020 Session. Known as Crossover, this is the point at which the House and Senate exchange legislation and begin to work on the other chamber’s bills.  In a year with so much partisan debate, I have kept my focus on the issues you said impact your family the most: increasing quality jobs in our community, improving our schools, keeping your neighborhood safe with a focus on crime and the drug epidemic, and tackling access and affordability of health care in our communities. This has been…
