Harlow builds relationships to overcome classroom obstacles
0As a child, Lauren Harlow struggled in school with reading and writing, but it is now her favorite subject to teach. The Hopkins Elementary teacher said some students come in not even knowing how to write their names, or what their names look like, but are reading books at the end of the year. She said reading books allows her students to see there’s a whole world out there and she likes how they can connect their learning to what they’ve read. Harlow has been a kindergarten teacher at Hopkins for eight years and taught one year of first grade.…

Sleep soundly
0This article will be dated December 25, 2019, but you might be reading this on Christmas Eve. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of fire safety every day of your life. Fires at Christmas seem to hit a bit harder, but if you lose a loved one to a fire in August, it is just as painful. I remember a house fire that occurred a few years back, on Christmas Eve. I know that I may sound like a broken record, but the message is worth repeating, if you change one thing that makes your family safer. The narrative went…

Rediscovering old passion after 30-year hiatus
0Everyone on the planet needs food, water, and air to live, but for Chester resident Bob Cullison, he also needs something else: BMX riding. In the 1980s, Cullison began to start BMX racing as a child, with the sport consisting of three proficiency levels including novice, intermediate, and expert. Along with that, BMX riding was sectioned into age groups as well, with the oldest age group being around 18 and older. Disappointingly, Cullison was forced to stop BMX riding when he was 17 years old due to a broken knee he had sustained and stopped racing altogether for around thirty…
Second Baptist Church collects gifts for 20 angels
0The Rev. Johnnie Fleming Jr. and the SBC Chester congregation were able to bless 20 angels from the Chesterfield County Social Services Dept. During this holiday season, there is no better way than to show love and share love. It was a joy to bless and put smiles on children’s faces that otherwise may not have had gifts under the tree. Fleming has been at SBC for 26 yrs. and the church has adopted the motto “A Loving Church by the Side of the Road.”
Honoring the veterans interred
0The Christmas season is a time of gift giving, parties, family gatherings, and remembering. That time of remembering for many this year included participating in the Wreath Laying Ceremony held Saturday, December 14 at Sunset Memorial Park. Local citizens joined solders from Fort Lee, the Thomas Dale High School lacrosse Teams, American Heritage Girls Troop VA 1024, and Girl Scout Troops 475 and 26 to place 700 wreaths on the graves of veterans interred at Sunset. First time volunteer, Katie Gettings, attended the ceremony with her three young sons. “I wanted my boys to be here,” Katie said, “They need…
