Military Officers Present Scholarships to Graduates

The Southside Virginia Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America recently awarded 14 high school seniors Roper Memorial Scholarships, worth $1,000 each.

The scholarships were made possible through a bequest by the late Mrs. Caroline Roper, who asked that her gift be used in some way to honor the sacrifice, courage, and dedication of members of the Armed Forces in defense of our nation.  To fulfill that request, the Southside Virginia Chapter established the Roper Memorial Scholarship for children and grandchildren of currently serving and retired military service members without regard to rank of the person sponsoring the applicant.

As of 2016, the 19th year of the Roper Memorial Scholarships, the Chapter has given over $205,000 in scholarships to nearly 200 graduates.  This year’s recipients in the Village News readership area are: Summer Chenault, L.C. Bird High School; Taylor Thomas-Harris and Leah Jenkins, Matoaca High School; and Luis Rodriguez, Thomas Dale High School.
