Boys Soccer Coming off a Conference 12 Championship and a 5A South region appearance, Matoaca boys soccer will look to quickly reload and fend off Meadowbrook once again for a championship. Last year’s 13-2-3 season culminated in a defensive battle, a 1-0 loss to Hermitage. Three key components of the team are gone: one of those is Davis Topping, Conference 12 Player of the year and 2nd Team All-State honoree. Also departing is fellow All-State honoree and defender David Kim, and first team all-conference 12 midfielder Alec Sadler. While all these pieces were absolutely key to the Warriors’ success, there…

Matoaca will bring a young team to the table in 2016. The loss of two big time seniors in Allie Fitzke and Taylor Patterson will hurt, but second-year coach Greg Hunt has a number of younger players ready to go, and a sophomore hurler that will be the center piece of the program for the next three seasons, Katie Higgins. Higgins dominated youth leagues prior to hitting varsity, and replaced Matoaca all-time great Jessica McCabe after she ascended to the next level at James Madison University. As a freshman, she showed her true capabilities as she twirled a one hit…

Despite a valiant come back attempt in the fourth quarter, L.C. Bird fell to Potomac in the 5A state championship. The title was the second in three years for Potomac. Charles Falden made his name even more known as he almost single handedly took the game over, scoring 19 points in the fourth quarter, 17 over the last 2:30, including a stretch of 12 points in just 57 seconds of game clock. The unsigned senior shot 14-22 from the floor, 3-4 from three-point land and 4-5 from the charity stripe, adding seven rebounds. He finished with a season high 35…

Following his 35-point performance in the state championship game against Potomac, L.C. Bird senior guard Charles Falden picked up his second offer from Mount Olive College in North Carolina. This offer comes after the an offer from Virginia Union on December 30. Falden’s development took off following a stint on junior varsity where he averaged 25 points per game as a sophomore. A tough guard who can score off the dribble and that possesses a dominant mid-range jumper. He recently took his SATs, with qualifying scores and it is possible that Falden will receive a flurry of offers, possibly from…

Per coach Leon Gholson, Thomas Dale girls basketball guard/forward Jazlyn Eastling recently announced her verbal commitment to Division III Averett University in Danville. Eastling was not a big scorer for the Knights, at about four points per game, but a solid work ethic allowed her to snag seven rebounds per game. Another calling card for Eastling are strong defensive skills, something that Gholson instilled in his team all season long. Thomas Dale lost in the Conference 3 championship game to Cosby, 61-42 before traveling to Woodbridge in the 6A South region tournament, falling 67-53. The region appearance was the first…

Matoaca alum and current Delaware State point guard Devin Morgan had quite the freshman season. So much so, that he took home conference Rookie of the Year honors for the MEAC. A rebuilding program, the Hornets struggled to a 7-25 record, picking up five conference wins in 16 attempts. Morgan, however is sure to be a building block to the team’s future successes. The former Warrior led the team in scoring at 12 points per game, also leading Delaware State at three assists per game. Morgan still displayed strong shooting beyond the arc, connecting on 35.4 percent of his three-point…

A duo of Thomas Dale alums and a Cosby graduate have been knocking the cover off the ball for the VMI Keydets. Matthew Pita, a Cosby graduate and Nathan Eaton, a former Knight have put up monster freshman seasons thus far. Pita leads the team with a .371 batting average and is tied second on the team with five home runs to go with 18 RBI. Eaton has hit .328 while playing a solid shortstop. He has added three home runs, 10 RBI and four stolen bases on the year. Collin Fleischer, a Dale graduate and sophomore at VMI has…

The Knights (16-5) took a trip to regionals, navigating through an ultra competitive Conference 3 last season on a dramatic home run by First Team All-Conference 3 honoree and catcher Hunter Vay to sink the Rapids of James River. While they fell to Forest Park in 6A South regionals, they’ll be looking to push back to that point despite a younger roster and relatively inexperienced pitching staff. Nathan Eaton, last year’s staff ace and Tommy Barron, the team’s number two pitcher have moved on the next level at VMI and Randolph-Macon respectively. Corey Johnston is also a Keydet and Cody…

A trio of names that have already cemented their names in Matoaca athletics lore recently carved out some big time accomplishments at the college level – Neal Richards (VMI), Austin Akins (Coker) and Blake Roulo (George Mason). Richards has made an early mark on VMI’s program after winning four straight state championships in high school. After a third place finish in the Southern Conference 157 pound weight class, he earned a berth to the NCAA tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Roulo, a senior at George Mason finished fourth in the 149-pound weight class at the Eastern…

Recently, rising senior linebackers Rayshard Ashby and Isaiah Moore’s recruiting stocks have increased. Ashby picked up yet another offer and perhaps his most significant from West Virginia, a school now in the Big 12 conference. The Mountaineers join what should be a growing list for a player who swept virtually every possible award last season- Conference 12 and 5A South Defensive Player of the Year, VHSL All-State, All-Metro Defensive Player of the year, Virginia Preps first team all-star, USA Today first team all-state and RVA Game Break Player of the Year. WVU joins Marshall, Maryland, James Madison, Virginia Tech and…
