Before the 2015-2016 season started, the outlook was looking very bright for Thomas Dale. They returned every main component of their team and were looking to improve on the previous season’s 9-13 record. Monique Jones was the team’s leading scorer last year, returning for her junior year ready to pick up where she left off. Forward Kylah Webb led the team in rebounds last year as a freshman, and she appeared to come back stronger and more poised than ever. Katiyah Parker, a point guard and team leader was another returning starter, ready for a strong senior season. Elena Flowers,…

Matoaca (4-1) The Warriors on the other hand, are not as balanced of a team they have been in the past. That is because they have nine new wrestlers in their 2015-16 line-up and four of them had no wrestling experience previous to this year. Sam Braswell (106), Brandon Woody (113), Noah Roulo (126), Bryson Woody (152), Alvonte Jones (195) and Anthony “Shaun” Helm (295) went undefeated on the day. While Helm had to leave early for a visit to Virginia Tech, his team still performed in his absence in the last two matches of the day. Helm, a two-time…

During halftime of the boys’ basketball game against Meadowbrook, Thomas Dale held their 8th annual “Ring of Champions” ceremony. The Ring of Champions is meant to honor former students and coaches who made tremendous contributions to the Knights’ family. The first honoree was Les Keenan, Class of ’68. Les was a truly multi-talented athlete, being a three year starter in three different sports. He earned All Tri-City honors in both basketball and baseball, but ultimately baseball was the sport he decided to pursue further. He was a star baseball player at Ferrum College before later transferring to play outfield at…

After a tough start to the season turned into a playoff berth for the Meadowbrook Monarchs, lineman Chris Artis has something to be even more proud of. The 6-2, 305-pound tackle has committed to play football at Chowan University. “I chose Chowan so my parents would be able to come to my games,” said Artis. “And I really liked the coaching staff.” The Chowan commit had interest from North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, Morgan State and Virginia State. Artis started at guard in his sophomore and junior campaigns but was switched to offensive tackle in his senior year. He…

When James Madison football coach Everett Withers announced he was taking the head coach position at Texas State, it sent shock waves throughout the Virginia social media community. L.C. Bird defensive back Kumonde Hines made an announcement shortly thereafter. The once JMU commit would be following Withers on a full ride to Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas- just southwest of Austin. “Coach Withers seems like a great person and I felt like he was very loyal to me,” Hines said. Hines was an important piece to the Skyhawks’ defensive puzzle in 2015 as he provided excellent coverage and…

Thomas Dale picked up four wins, only falling to Cosby and had five wrestlers go 5-0 or 4-1 on the day. Caleb Oberly (106), Angelo Scott (120), Blake Correa (126), Jealon Williams (138), and Chris Collins (152) were among the standouts. Scott, Correa and Collins were all unblemished. The Knights graduated the dominant Corey Leonard last year and were without two key combatants in Roderick “Main” Wilson (160) and D.J. Williams (195). Anchored by a very solid group of wrestlers in the lower weight classes headlined by Scott and Correa, Thomas Dale figures to compete in the Conference 3 Championships.…

L.C. Bird girls basketball is just one year removed from a 5A state finals appearance, and they are playing like a team that will do anything to return to the Siegel Center this year. After losing standouts Taja Cole (Louisville) and Tyra Shelton (Queens-Charlotte), the Skyhawks have done a great job of anchoring their team down around Angela Caraballo. She has been the driving force of their team this year with her talent and leadership. Coach Chevette Waller has nothing but praise for Caraballo. “She always knocks down big shots,” Waller said. “I can count on her whenever I put…

The Meadowbrook girls’ basketball team enters the New Year hot, with a 7-0 record. This success can be attributed to someone that was missing last year’s –guard, Nia Jenkins. After being named to second-team all-conference as a sophomore, Jenkins sat out last season because of personal reasons. This year, she is back and better than ever, often providing the spark for Meadowbrook on offense and defense. While the Monarchs could have used Jenkins last year, they are ecstatic that she is back this year to finish her high school career doing what she loves. To put it simply, Jenkins is…

The Central Virginia Hurricanes AAU football team reached the pinnacle of success on December 13 when they brought home a National Championship by defeating the Columbia Elite Junior Bearcats 42-24. It is the culmination of a lot of hard work for an AUU program that is young, just four years old. The U10 team, that is just in its second season, reached the top. “The success showed the kids that we can play anybody, anywhere,” said coach Wayne Jennings. “One day they will be called upon to beat someone big, and they’ll be battle tested.” While Jennings said that it…
