Ashby offered by James Madison It was a good week for the L.C. Bird linebacker, Rayshard Ashby. Fresh off a Conference 12 Defensive Player of the Year award, he also picked up his third college offer – this one from James Madison University. In the regular season, Ashby totaled 87 tackles, 16 for losses while wreaking havoc on opposing quarterbacks with 10.5 sacks. Colonial Heights coach Mark Lee isn’t always right, but he’s never wrong. Good thing. In outer space, explosions give birth to stars. L.C. Bird’s reemergence into the volleyball scene started in 2013 with the first-ever Conference 12 championship. Lache Harper was just a role player. Bird team leader and spark plug Taylor McNeely reached a career milestone during their loss to Mills Godwin in the 5A South Region tournament- she tallied her 1,000th career dig and set a school record. A player not built on size (5-3), but hustle and heart, digs require both of those. McNeely is often seen on the floor going after loose balls, making friends with the hardwood. Matoaca 44, Thomas Dale 35 In a wild game, Matoaca defeated rival Thomas Dale 44-35 on their senior night and capped the program’s best season since 2006, finishing 7-3. A go-ahead field goal by Justin Dyke gave Dale the lead at 37-35 and running back Jamison Harrison, returning from a hand injury delivered the knockout blow on a scoring run with 1:36 to play. Everything came together in the playoffs this year for a young Matoaca girls’ volleyball team. The team is gelling more than ever, and they are going further than anyone expected them to. 1. L.C. Bird (10-0) The Skyhawks ran the table this year, finishing the regular season undefeated for the sixth time in seven years. The defense was, in a word, dominating. L.C. Bird’s defensive team allowed just 19 points all season. Just seven of those points were scored against the first team. Against the run game, they were dominant, allowing just 42 yards on the season.
