JAMES RIVER GIRLS Joe Sullivan is always nervous, at least when it comes to volleyball.  One may think that a coach with such a technical approach and sound understanding of the game wouldn’t be.  “I’m nervous the whole time, I’m always anxious to get here and get things started,” Sullivan said. “My daughter and I talked about it on the way to the game, I’m always nervous.” Sullivan didn’t need to be Thursday night. James River cruised, using a typically strong defensive effort to sweep Cosby 3-0 to bring home the Conference 3 Championship.  “I love defense, I coach off a…

In 1994 there was a hit sitcom called Sister-Sister, where Tia and Tamera Landry were identical twins with very different tendencies. While sisters Kendall and Makenzy Johnson aren’t twins, the different tendencies they possess make them dangerous on the volleyball court for James River. The Rapids’ Kendall and Makenzy Johnson form of the the better setter-hitter combinations in the Central Region. Surrounding Kendall on the front line are Baylor-commit Nicole Thomas and Randolph-Macon-commit Alexia Wolfe. The talented quartet comprises one of the most talented front lines in the area. This year, nothing less than a state championship will satisfy the…

L.C. Bird field hockey coach Veronica Zuccarello moved here from New Jersey on a Friday. On Monday, she met her team. Both coach and team have had a season to remember, as the Skyhawks are headed to regionals for the first time since 2004. “The season has been awesome for them,” Zuccarello said. “But it’s been more awesome for me, they just don’t know that.” Zuccarello calls the team her “best friends.” After all, they were among the first people she met in addition to the people she spent the most time with. “They are a huge part of my…

L.C. Bird 55, Huguenot 0 The Skyhawks rolled over the Huguenot Falcons again, 55-0. Huguenot has not scored on L.C. Bird since 2006, when they defeated the Skyhawks. J.B. Wright rushed for 145 yards and three scores, while Shedrick McCall ran for 116 yards and two scores. Jalen Elliott was 9-12 passing for 134 yards and two touchdowns (one rushing). Kier Townsend was the recipient of Elliott’s passing touchdown, and has hauled in a touchdown catch in five consecutive games. Defensively, Rayshard Ashby led the way with six tackles, four tackles for a loss, a sack and fumble recovery. Manell…

Kobe Bryant once said in a press conference – “Everything negative- pressure, challenges – is all an opportunity for me to rise.” For this year’s version of the Meadowbrook football team and its senior running back, Jace Miller, that statement holds a lot of weight. The Miller family is an athletic one. Jace’s older brother, Justin, starred for Meadowbrook in 2014 and is a redshirt freshman at Virginia Union. Their sister, Jazmine, was a standout track athlete for the Monarchs. Athletic challenges pale in comparison to the biggest challenge they have faced – one that through tragedy has brought them…

In Chester, Skyhawks soar, but apparently they can also run. Both the the boys and girls cross-country teams brought home Conference 12 Championships this past week. “The team has been really dedicated to showing improvement,” said coach Adam Canning. “We had several runners shave their times significantly.” The biggest surprise for the Skyhawks has been junior Tyler McNulty, who took home the conference championship in just his third competitive race. “Sometimes you get lucky and get a natural runner,” Canning said. Kenny Sullivan, a junior, has really shown significant improvement this season. Sullivan was running in the low 19:00s last…

1. L.C. Bird (9-0) As everyone expected, the Skyhawks took care of Huguenot in convincing fashion, 55-0. The Falcons have not scored a point on L.C. Bird since 2006, as Tim Holmes, a friend and twitter follower of mine points out, George W. Bush was still in office. That Huguenot team defeated L.C. Bird at home that season, though. As far as the game goes, J.B. Wright rushed for 145 yards and three touchdowns and now has rushed for 1602 yards and 20 touchdowns on the season. Shedrick McCall pitched in 116 yards and two touchdowns in mop-up time, while…

Prince George (12-4) Heading into the Conference 12 playoffs in 2014, Prince George was riding high. They were young, the top seed in the tournament and had played a tough schedule very well. Then they got upset by Matoaca in the first round. Their season was over. A refocused Royals team didn’t succumb to the same fate in 2015, as they defeated Highland Springs to advance to 5A South Regionals, and then beat L.C. Bird to take home the Conference 12 Championship. “This year is a better feeling than last year,” said coach Ann Lambert. “You never think you’re…

Meadowbrook 23, Thomas Dale 14 For the second straight week, Meadowbrook made the most of their opponent’s mistakes. This week, five special teams gaffs aided in a 23-14 victory over Thomas Dale. After jumping out to a 14-0 lead on the strength of a 53-yard touchdown pass from Michael Hodges to Jacquez Meadows and a recovered onside kick produced a one-yard run by running back Jordyn Hunter. The Knights fired back as junior quarterback Matthew Lawton completed a pair of 30 yard touchdown passes to Brian Bullock and Mariel Jennings, respectively. The second half was relatively quiet for both teams,…
