Justin LaRue of Matoaca High’s golf team qualified for the state tournament as an individual by firing rounds of 75 and 74 in Region 5B play. He joined Charlie Kennedy (Mills Godwin) and Zach Valdez (Manchester) as individual qualifiers. Deep Run and Douglas Freeman qualified as teams. 

The “Tee It Up for Travis” golf tournament and celebration will be held Friday, Oct. 25, at the Country Club of Petersburg, 1250 Flank Road. The event will include prizes, food, beverages and 18 holes of golf. Chester resident Travis Gathright died of colorectal cancer in January of 2018 at age 42. Fee for one person is $100. In the span of those 15 seasons, Hall said the Warriors have dominated the Central District and been remained competitive in the region. “Although last year we finished fourth in the region, we still qualified three players for the 5A state tournament,” he said. Curtis Reeves and Randy Wilson are pictured on a golf course. When two people meet for the first time it might be a coincidence, but when Randy Wilson and Curtis Reeves met, a better term might be “fate.” Wilson and Reeves met two years ago at a church fellowship called “Birdies and Boogies” at Chester’s Christian Life Church. The church establishes small group fellowship opportunities for people with common interests in order for members to get to know each other better. “Our church believes in fellowship,” Wilson said. “We develop friendships through these fellowship groups.” Wilson and Reeves became friends…

The Thomas Dale High School golf team downed Dinwiddie last week, 190-210, at the Meadowbrook Country Club. Jack Brockwell’s 39 was the medalist for the day on the nine-hole par 36 course. Other finishers for the Knights were: Anna White, 44, Nick Papakostas, 47, and Aliyah Kellum, 61. Cody Stanford led Dinwiddie with a 43. He was followed by: Trent Henshaw, 49, Taylor Miller, 58, and Ethan Townsend, 60.

MATOACA GOLF Two seasons removed from a 5A State Championship, Matoaca golf is set to be a contender again this year, posting an 11-2 record with their losses coming at the hands of top competition in Deep Run and Mills Godwin. “We are not as deep as last year,” said coach John Hall. “But we have a great confidence in our top four.” Hall has a strong top three, and three more that round out a formidable line-up.
