The Blue Heaven Trio will play the last beat of this year’s Third Thursdays concert series on the Village Green, in Chester, on August 20 beginning at 7 p.m.
With a combined experience of over 100 years, the members of the Blue Heaven Trio explored many musical genres. Last year, bassist Vince Newton played with a gypsy jazz band on the same stage to a great crowd. Now he has moved on to play jazz and swing with Blue Heaven.
Doug Hepler, guitar and vocals, describes their musical style as songs from the great American song book.
Hepler names some of the tunes the group will add their own pitch to next week: “As Time Goes By,” “Bye Bye Blues,” “Choo Choo Ch’ Boogie,” “Crazy,” “Deep Purple,” “Embraceable You,” “How High the Moon,” “Is You Is or Is You Ain’t My Baby,” Love “Letters in the Sand,” “Meditation,” “Puttin’ On the Ritz,” “Route 66,” “The Sunny Side of the Street,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” “This Masquerade,” “Walkin’ After Midnight,” and, of course, “My Blue Heaven.”
The Blue Heaven Trio plays regularly at Marty’s Grill, The Gayton Kirk and The Casbah. Playing for their first time in Chester, attendees will be surprised at the way Blue Heaven performs these standards.
Adding a jazz, swing and folk flavor to their tunes Joe Scott, lead guitarist contributes flavor and texture to the group’s intricate melodies.
“Playing this music makes me feel like I should have been born early enough to have played in the 1930’s and 40’s,” Hepler said, adding, that the “The songs and the camaraderie” are what makes him love to play and perform with the trio.
A project of the Chester Community Association (CCA), the free concerts will end on an upbeat and return in April 2016.
The series ends this month due to the arrival of ChesterFest, another CCA free event on September 26 on the Chester Village Green. Music will be offered all day, and include a wide range of styles and genres.
