Over summer vacation, Matoaca High AP language and composition students had the opportunity to read “Waterwalk: A Passage of Ghosts” by Steven Faulkner. Described by Goodreads as “a poet with a sense of humor, Faulkner brings the majestic American heartland to life in one of the finest books ever written about a river journey.” The book describes the 1,000 mile journey by Faulkner and his son as they retraced the 1673 river journey of French explorers Marquette and Joliet from Lake Michigan to St. Louis. The book has been turned into an independent film that premiered at Longwood University where Dr. Faulkner is a member of the English Department. Matoaca High students will have an opportunity to meet the author Thursday, October 1 when Dr. Faulkner will visit the school to read from his work of creative nonfiction, meet his student audience and answer their questions.
