Thomas Dale 28, Dinwiddie 13
The Knights’ defense rose to the occasion, defeating the Generals 28-13 on Saturday afternoon at Ed Karpus field.

Thomas Dale jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Dinwiddie punter Joseph Tyree’s knee touched the ground on a kick. Matt Lawton ran a QB sneak to give the Knights a lead. Dinwiddie answered, with a six-yard run by Tye Freeland to tie the score at 7-7.

Led by primarily the passing game in this contest, the Knights would stretch the lead out to as much as 28-7 on a pair of touchdowns by Brian Bullock (one thrown by Gabe McCollin) and a six-yard run by fullback Traquan Booker.

Lawton finished the contest 9-14 passing for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Wide out Brian Bullock caught two passes for 95 yards and two scores, and Sam Stark led the Thomas Dale defense with 13 tackles.

The second seed in 6A South Region, the Knights (5-1) travel to Petersburg (2-4) this Friday to face the Crimson Wave. Kick-off is 7:30 p.m.

Matoaca 51, Petersburg 28
Matoaca put together another fine offensive performance this past Friday, lighting up the scoreboard for 51 points as they cruised past the Crimson Wave.

After Petersburg jumped out to an early lead, it was mostly all Matoaca afterwards. Justin Ford finished with three touchdown passes, two more to Terrence Whitfield who now has 12 on the year, and another to sophomore Jalen Dowe. Running back Jamison Harrison rushed for 127 yards and a score. Defensively, all-state long jumper Anthony Warner returned an interception for a touchdown.

Coach D.L. Johnson was critical of his team’s performance, saying that it was their worst since the Manchester game, the Warriors’ only loss of the season. However, there will be time to improve in practice this week.

Petersburg’s Stanley Davis II gave an excellent effort for the Crimson Wave, totaling 204 total yards and all four of his team’s touchdowns.

Matoaca (5-1) has a very important home game with Meadowbrook (2-4) this Friday at 7p.m. Both teams are fighting for playoff positioning in 5A South and a head-to-head victory would aid either team greatly.

Hopewell 28, Meadowbrook 22
After jumping out to a 14-0 lead, Meadowbrook fell at the hands of Hopewell 28-14. The Monarchs couldn’t hold on as the Blue Devils rallied for what was at one point, 28 unanswered points.

The Monarchs got their homecoming game started off the right way on a trick play- a double pass from Michael Hodges to Jace Miller to Bajon McCray that went for 44 yards. Minutes later, Hodges passed to Jacquez Meadows for a 16-yard strike.

Hopewell answered, scoring via the ground game. Anthony Crawford scored twice and Ronnie Walker and Nas Cooper added touchdowns.

Partially completing the comeback, Hodges passed to Jordan Jeter to narrow the score to 28-22, but Meadowbrook was unable to recover an onside kick to continue the effort.

Last week, the Monarchs sat in a familiar place as the eighth seed in the 5A South standings. They’ll look to improve their stock in a game against Matoaca on the road. Kick-off is 7 p.m.
