Area seniors are approaching the end of the first nine weeks of their final year in high school. While sophomore and junior classes were taking PSAT exams last Wednesday at Matoaca High School, the senior class had Senior Empowerment Day; attending forums and a social to discover opportunities for them after graduation.

Tiara Broaddus, interning in her final semester at Virginia Commonwealth University, earning a degree in counseling, organized the successful event for the 438 seniors. “All presenters followed-thru and attended,” said Broaddus. “The feedback has been good from the students, the presenters and the vendors.”

Broaddus considered the senior population and what their needs may be. Presenters represented universities and career colleges, each military branch, job corps and employment opportunities for special education students.

During the forums, special education students got a walk through the job application process, how to dress for a job interview and the important aspects of keeping a job.

College bound seniors were walked through the process of applying for a college. Discovering what each institute offers in the way of academics, social and athletic opportunities, large or small colleges and making the decision.

A number of Career colleges informed the attendees to their forums of the different programs a career college offers and how long it takes before a student can enter the work force.

The military branches wanted their attendees to consider the opportunities available to them by serving in the military.

The social time brought all presenters together for seniors to ask more questions, and gather information to take with them.
