The first day of the New Year brought out hundreds of families to breath fresh air and discover Pocahontas State Park for the First Day Hike.
Celebrating their 80th anniversary in 2016 of the Virginia State Park system, there were a number of ways to participate for those interested in self-guided opportunities, geocaching, discovering the parks newly created tree I.D., trails and or visiting the Nature Center, CCC Museum and the front office.
Ranger-led experiences included a four-mile loop hike exploring the CCC Legacy, a stroller-friendly Tree I.D. Hike and a two- and a-half-mile loop around Beaver Lake.
Parking fees were waived for the day and the first 50 guests received a special commemorative 80th anniversary pin. Guests were also invited to enter the park system’s First Day Hikes Photo Contest and First Day Hikes Team Competition.
