The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia (CHSV) in partnership with Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer four camps this summer.
Diggin’ in History Beginner Archaeology Camp is designed for children ages eight through 12 who will learn how to search for clues from the past. Hands-on activities include site surveys, excavations and artifact repair. A field trip to the Prince George Heritage Museum is included. The dates for these camps are July 11through 15 and August 8 through 12. Time is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $100/camper. Prepaid registration is required.
Junior Archaeology Summer Camp, for children ages 11-16, will examine site maps, surveys and drawings, learn to establish grids, to mark excavation plots, screen sites and analyze soil samples. A field trip to Prince George for a field excavation will be included.
July 25 through 29, 9 a.m. until1 p.m. Space is limited, prepaid registration is required. Cost: $100
Both of these camps will be held at Historic Trinity Church, 10111 Iron Bridge Rd.
In addition, Heritage Crafts and Games Camp features many of the common period games that children enjoyed during the 17th and 18th centuries. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in colonial activities from calligraphy, candle dipping and making various crafts each day ranging from medicine bags, cattail boats, making clay pots and others. No video games, no television, no batteries required! Four separate half day sessions offered at Magnolia Grange, Chesterfield County Museum, and Historic Trinity Church, all located within the historic Courthouse Complex. Monday through Thursday, August 15 through 18, 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Cost: $80 Ages eight through 12. Space is limited.
