Nick Hackett is passionate about car racing, he has been navigating race cars since he was thirteen. Now, five years later, it continues to be his passion. Hackett is a young entrepreneur who is a skilled master when it comes to remote controlled race cars.
“When I was seven,” Hackett said excitedly, “I soloed my first remote controlled nitro-airplane. It was so awesome. My dad was an avid plane flyer and then I got interested.”
My brother was also interested in the beginning, Hackett explained, his dad told him if he got A’s and B’s on his report card he would buy him a remote controlled plane. Well he pulled off getting the A’s and B’s, got his plane, but he later lost interest. I was able to take ownership of the plane.
He said he then moved into remote control cars.
“It was an expensive hobby,” Hackett said. “I didn’t have the money to pay for it, but I wanted to do it. I bought me a simple, cheap lawn mower, knocked on some doors and went to work. As my customers increased I was able to take part in my hobby.”
Hackett then went a further step up on the success ladder.
“I turned fifteen and got my driver’s license,” he said. “I was able to purchase my own car with the money I had earned.”
At this time Hackett, along with his father took part in a partnership with “Full Mod RC,” then later the father and son shared a partnership with RVA Hobbies. Now Hackett while still working diligently with his lawn care work, shares ownership with his father and one other person at “Hobby Extreme.”
Last month, Hackett had the opportunity to share his passion and skills at Meadowdale Library with a display and a track set up in a parking lot during there Remote Control Car Rodeo event.
Other remote control hobbyists and those just curious were able to stop by, talk with Hackett, and if needed, receive repair tips or modification tips. If attendees brought their own remote control vehicles they had the opportunity to drive or race around the parking lot track.
Marlon Cox has a passion for remote control Monster Trucks. At last month’s event he had the opportunity to put his trucks on display and to race around the track with his remote control Monster Trucks.
Cox is associated with Showtime RC Motorsports. “I have been racing and driving the remote control vehicles since I was 16,” Cox said. “Monster Trucks are my favorite thing.”
Virginia has remote control racetracks and events in many locations, two locations are JMW Motorsports in Midlothian, and Debbie’s RC World in Virginia Beach.
April’s event piqued the interest of many visitors and the cars zooming around the parking lot track were amazing.
