The Chesterfield County Department of General Services is reminding citizens that free mulch is available at the county’s two convenience centers.
General Services operates two convenience centers for waste disposal and recycling. Woody debris that customers drop at the centers is shredded into mulch that is then made available to citizens for free.
“Shredding the woody debris into mulch enables us to accomplish two things,” Environmental Manager Jeff Howard said. “It provides a way for us to give back to the community, and it reduces the amount of woody debris that otherwise would be placed in a landfill.”
With springtime comes lots of people doing yard work, which means lots of woody debris dropped off at the convenience centers. That means there’s also lots of free mulch currently available to citizens who want it.
Citizens are welcome to load their vehicles or trailers with mulch during the convenience centers’ normal hours of operation, and the Southern Area Convenience Center will load it for citizens on Thursdays between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.
