Students in grades four and five were given an opportunity to acknowledge older adults who have had positive impacts on their lives through an essay contest that was open to all Chesterfield County Public School students. Essays were received from 262 students at 12 elementary schools.
The Board of Supervisors recognized Lia Green, a student at Winterpock Elementary School, as the grand-prize winner of the annual essay contest for Older Americans Month at their meeting on April 27. Green received a copy of the resolution and a $25 gift card to Barnes & Noble.
Green wrote about her great-grandma, whom she described as a very loving, caring and truly great person. She wrote about how her great-grandma would make up stories to entertain her when she was little, which made her strive to be a better person. “Remember, memories will last you a lifetime,” Green wrote.
The top essays from other participating schools were written by: Rubaiyet Hossain (Bellwood Elementary), Gabriel Mayor-Mora (Bettie Weaver), Tavi Berger (Bon Air), Shauntel Samuels (C.C.Wells), Victoria Baird (Clover Hill), Morgan Garrett (Crestwood), Ella Searcey (Gordon), Olivia Woodson (Jacobs Road), Travis Daniel Booth (J.G. Hening), Anaiya Winfield (Matoaca), Christian Washington (Robious), and Victoria Garza (Winterpock).
