Longtime Matoaca High teacher Craig D. Nixon was sentenced last week to 24 months in jail with all but six months suspended for two misdemeanor counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The sentence came down after a plea agreement resulted in two felonies being downgraded.
Nixon, 51, taught at the Chesterfield County school for 18 years and had no prior criminal record. He was originally charged with indecent liberties with a 16-year-old girl who was a student at the school.
As part of his sentence, Nixon – a Midlothian resident – was required to complete a psychosexual evaluation within one year and have no contact with the victim.
He was arrested May 4 of last year and was released from jail following his Feb. 13 court hearing, which is more than nine months. He will be on probation for three years and was ordered to pay a $531 fine.
According to a criminal complaint written by Chesterfield police officer L.M. Kay, Nixon wrote sexually explicit letters to the victim and would have her come to his classroom before school to kiss. The compliant stated that Nixon was continuing to contact the victim even after being told not to by her father.
A bill of particulars filed by Nixon’s attorney Ned M. Mikula Jan. 9 states that the girl testified during an Aug. 30, 2018, preliminary hearing that Nixon proposed a sex act on Dec. 8, 2017, in the classroom. In that document, Mikula requested that one of the counts be dismissed because the girl only testified to one.
According to the Chesterfield Schools, Nixon worked at the high school from Aug. 24, 2000, until April 3, 2018.
