Continuing what has been a triumphant season so far, Matoaca High’s field hockey team has a 11-1 record after topping Colonial Heights in a 10-0 “mercy-rule” victory on Wednesday, Oct. 9. One of the big reasons for their overall success has been senior Annie Grace Louthan.
Louthan is Matoaca’s vocal leader, but she also lets her stick do the talking. She scored her 100th goal against Hopewell on Oct. 2 and now sits at 108 goals with three games left in her senior season. (The Warriors faced Thomas Dale on Monday.)
Louthan scored six of the team’s goals against Colonial Heights and is in the running to become the Virginia High School League’s second all-time leading scorer. She’ll need 110 goals to accomplish that feat.
“Hitting my 100th career goal was a big deal, but it was also very emotional,” explained Louthan. “It’s taken me four seasons to accomplish that, and there’s been a lot of people who have come and gone. So I’m excited for the rest of the season, but a little sad too.”
Emotions ran high throughout the evening, as Matoaca celebrated senior night, preparing to send off eight graduates-to-be.
Senior Morgan Mick scored three goals against the Colonials, and sophomore Wren Stocks scored a goal.
Head coach Deborah Wallace has hopes of breaking records and moving up in the regional rankings.
A pivotal match-up with Prince George on Thursday has large implications on the Region 5B standings.
The Warriors finish the regular season slate with Patrick Henry (Ashland) and Hopewell.
“We just have to work really hard in our big game against Prince George,” Wallace said. “Get that win, then we can hopefully – fingers crossed – be seeded in the top two.”
