2021 start

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful New Year world of the Dogpound. Despite IT being a new year, some things kind of keep going on past the finish line, like my computer. My last 2020 article mentioned that I was experiencing some problems with my computer at home. I was seeing continued deterioration of my connection to my AOL account. So, not being particularly “Nerdy,” I chose a recovery application that claimed that it would not change any of my settings or applications. Wrong on both accounts. The recovery was successful, but most of my settings and virus protection were lost. Over time I was able to get most of it back, but my Word document refused to cooperate, so off I went to the Microsoft help desk to see what they could do. The session started out pretty slowly as they worked their way around my computer trying this and trying, until it was finally discovered that I had downloaded the wrong version of Microsoft 365. Whatever I had download was not the desktop version. So, three hours later, I finally had my old Word system back. Yea! Not so fast; that was not the last of it. I use a secondary monitor because my laptop screen is too small for me to use on a regular basis. Like me, my eyes are getting older, and bigger is better. My secondary monitor no longer showed a full screen; it was only about 3/4, which made it a bit difficult to read. Normally it is an easy fix, but for some reason those fixes were not working. This next session did not go well at all. Unable to readily solve my problem, the tech decided that I did not have the most updated version of Windows 10 and proceed to delete my old one and upload a new one. We started our session around 7 p.m., and by midnight we were still updating. Sigh. By the time I returned from work the next day, the updates were completed, but my screen still remained less than optimal. Back into the “nerd” pool, and after an hour or so, she decided she would need to consult with her fellow team members. Another sigh. I was not sleepy, so I kept trying a few things, and, wait for it, I actually got my full screen back. I went back to a previous application and this time it worked. Not sure what changed, but I am just happy I can read my screen again!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
“We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives, not looking for flaws, but for potential.” Ellen Goodman

SMILES
A man is playing a round of golf with his buddies. On the sixth hole, a hole over water, he proceeds to flub nine balls into the water. Frustrated over his poor golfing ability, he heaves his golf clubs into the water, and begins to walk off the course. Then all of a sudden, he turns around and jumps back into the lake, his buddies apparently thinking he is going to retrieve his clubs. When he comes out of the water, he doesn’t have his clubs and begins to walk off the course. Then one of his buddies asks, “Why did you jump into the lake?” And he said, “I left my car keys in the bag.”

I think that is enough to start the New Year. As always, be good, do good, play safe, and remember, you have 365 days to write a new chapter in your life. Make it a good read.
