Chester loses two of its icons

Lenny-Pond-colorLennie Pond had been a fixture in Chester for as many years as he was old. A Chester resident who grew up in Ettrick, died Feb. 10, 2016 of complications from cancer at VCU Medical Center in Richmond. He was 75. Lennie always loved to go fast and would race anything that had wheels on it. He was a five-time late model Sportsman State Champion. He was named NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year in 1973 and won the Talladega 500 in 1978. Lennie was a familiar face at Heritage Chevrolet where he worked for over 28 years.

He is survived by his wife Catherine Pond, three children, two grand children and numberous extended family and friends.

CHARLES TODD

charlie-toddCharles C. Todd, Jr., 86, of Chester, died on Friday, February 19, 2016. He was born in Tarboro, N.C. and graduated from Rocky Mount High School. He received his B.S. in Geology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Far East Command during the Korean War. He received his Doctor of Education from the University of Virginia.

Dr. Todd taught in Raleigh and in Halifax County, Va. and served as an administrator in Henrico County, Charlottesville, the Virginia Department of Education and was superintendent of schools in Hopewell for many years. He was an elder and Stephen Minister at Chester Presbyterian Church and was a long-time volunteer for the Virginia Voice for the Print Handicapped. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #284, president of the Richmond Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, was on the Board of Virginians for Integrity in Government, the Board of Keep Virginia Beautiful, an honorary member of Hopewell Rotary Club, served 8 years on the Fort Lee Advisory Board and was a member of the James River Catfish Club and the Richmond Kiwanis Club.

He served as a lobbyist at the General Assembly for the Virginia Retired Teachers Association. Dr. Todd was also a contributing columnist for the Village News and Capital Connections Magazine.

He is survived by his wife, Alice R. Todd and their family.
