Aaron Monts commits to Virginia State

Former Matoaca standout Aaron Monts attended Richmond Christian last year. No matter what school he attended, there was little doubt that he’d be a college-level running back.

He committed to Virginia State this past week.

“The atmosphere and scholarship this there,” Monts said. “There’s a great chance of playing early.”

Monts was an integral part of Pat Manuel’s offense in 2013 as a part of a backfield by committee where he played solidly. Then, the athlete transferred to Richmond Christian’s program in 2014.
“My grades went up tremendously and I continued my development as a running back,” said Monts.

The senior was the star of the show for a Warriors program that was in its first year of existence. RCA finished 7-3 overall, falling to Roanoke Catholic in the state semi-finals. Monts rushed for 1,659 yards and 27 touchdowns. Those numbers could have soared higher if it wasn’t for a nagging ankle injury at times during the season.

Coach Carlton Harris coached at Matoaca as a freshman, and has seen him develop as both an athlete and student and said that Monts possessed a lot of traits you can’t coach.

“He always had the talent, he would have been talented anywhere he played,” Harris said. “He had a strong will to be better.”

Months also had interest from Liberty, Howard, Bluefield College (VA), Norfolk State and Shenandoah before choosing to become a Trojan.
