by Zach Long – Virginia Tech, over the last decade or so, has been a premier Division I college football program. With that being said, premier programs need premier players, and L.C. Bird has proved to produce plenty.
L.C. Bird defensive end Hakeem Beamon received his second scholarship offer Wednesday from the Hokies. Beamon broke the news on twitter.
“I am blessed to say that I have received my second offer from Virginia Tech!!! #GoHokies”
Being only a sophomore, Beamon’s talent and potential remained under wraps for quite some time. Then he received his first offer from North Carolina before his sophomore season began. Needless to say, at 6-4, and 245 pounds, Beamon was bound to be noticed at some point.
Sure enough, his presence has been felt, and he has made some generous contributions to the Skyhawks defense this year.
L.C. Bird stands at 7-1 on the season, with its only loss coming in a tough one to Manchester. One of Beamon’s best performances came in a big-time game, against an explosive Monacan offense. He helped subdue the Chiefs with two sacks and a tackle for a loss. L.C. Bird, as always, is poised to make a long playoff run and pursue a state title. With the remainder of this season and two more along with that, Beamon has the chance to become another can’t-miss recruit from L.C. Bird.
Looking forward, Virginia Tech offers a football program that is sure to interest Beamon. Former Skyhawks player Shawn Payne chose to further his football career with the Hokies. Also, L.C. Bird senior Rayshard Ashby has already committed to be a Hokies player. So it’s clear that Virginia Tech likes the product that coach David Bedwell is producing at L.C. Bird.
The Hokies are currently 5-2 in the ACC Coastal Division, and are eyeing a possible ACC Championship appearance. Their recent performance has definitely been noted, and the program seems to be on an upward trend.
What could be the biggest attraction to Beamon at Virginia Tech is defensive guru Bud Foster. Foster has been the defensive coordinator at Virginia Tech for 21 years now, and some consider him one of the best at what he does. Foster earned the Frank Broyles award in 2006 for being the best assistant coach in the country. That year, the Hokies finished at 10-3. Beamon, being listed as a defensive end, could certainly be drawn to a well coached defense at Virginia Tech.
Beamon has a long time to think about college, and more offers are sure to come rushing in. With two ACC offers already in his portfolio, that no doubt, that more premier programs will begin to chase this premier athlete.
