In many cases, once an athlete gets their first scholarship offer, more are sure to come. Especially if they still have another full season to play.
A pair of Meadowbrook football players have received their first invitation to play at the collegiate level. Dontez Braxton and Brandan Delaney have both received offers from UVA-Wise.
Braxton, a 5-10, 165 pound defensive back, is a tough corner, and he had quite a junior season. In total he had 57 tackles, broke up 10 passes, made 5 tackles in the backfield, created a sack, and interception. Meadowbrook coach Adam Tiller expects some big things out of Braxton in his senior year and he likes what he can bring to the table.
“Braxton has been focused since I took the job, on his grades and his effort on the field,” said Tiller.
“Dontez is the most physical defensive back I’ve ever coached and will be a major factor in how we do in 2017.”
His teammate Delaney also had a terrific junior season. A workhorse in the trenches, Delaney uses his sturdy 6-2, 265 pound frame to help dictate the game at the line of scrimmage.
In 2016, Delaney made 38 crush blocks on offense and managed 2 sacks on defense. This upcoming fall, Coach Tiller will call on Delaney to command the front lines on both sides of the ball.
“He will anchor our offensive and defensive lines,” exclaimed Tiller. “He is really turning over a new leaf in the building, and his senior year will be his best on the field, as he is very eager to get going.”
Both Braxton and Delaney are excited to be recruited with plenty of time left, and are thankful for the opportunity.
“It feels great, and I am very thankful. I wasn’t expecting an offer around this time, but I was blessed enough to get this opportunity early,” explained Braxton.
“I never thought that I would get an offer at all,” said Delaney. “But now that I have one I’m gonna be working ten times harder to keep growing that offer list.”
