A South Hill native and Longwood University graduate is moving up in the world.
Lauren Wood recently replaced David Potter as supervisor at Bensley Recreation Center.
She likes helping people have a good time.
“I love working with people and being able to provide fun programs and activities,” she said. “People come to us because they want an outlet, something to enhance them and make them happy.”
She plans on improving the events and activities at the recreation center, which is located at 2900 Drewrys Bluff Road just west of Jefferson Davis Highway.
“We’re the fun place. People love to come to us,” said Wood, a therapeutic recreation major whose first day on the job was April 9.
She comes to Chesterfield County from Hanover County, where she was activities director at Hanover Health & Rehabilitation Center. Prior to that, she was in Isle of Wight County for seven years where she worked as a recreation specialist and was the fair and events coordinator.
The recreation center will soon be revamping its game room and lounge, she said. When finished, visitors will be able to play foosball, use one of two computers or watch cable TV.
Some of the weekly activities at the facility include aerobics, belly dancing, cardio kickboxing and karate classes, and card games such as bridge, canasta and pinochle. A first-come, first-served picnic shelter is outside, along with a playground and baseball and soccer fields.
The center is available to rent after 6 p.m. weekdays and on weekends. A church group, Kingdom Ministries Principles, rents the multipurpose room from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays.
An American Traditions-themed potluck for senior citizens featuring country music will be held from noon to 2 p.m. June 25.
