To the Editor: Two weeks ago, my husband happened to see a Richmond Times-Dispatch (RTD) article that the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) was having a meeting that night about the Shoosmith landfill on Route 10, expanding into the nearby rock quarry. The meeting was to address how the quarry would be lined to make it usable as a landfill. It’s too bad the DEQ didn’t see fit to send a notice to the surrounding neighborhoods and homeowners associations, so that more people would have attended that meeting. The few Chesterfield residents who did attended were told that permission…

To the Editor: On Sunday, July 19, my husband, Ray, was cutting grass in the ditch in front of our house when he had a heart attack. Someone passing by saw him lying in the ditch and called 911. They did not leave a name, but I want that person/persons to know how much I appreciate them taking time to care. I am sure others rode by without doing anything because Harrowgate Road is a busy road. Whoever called that day saved his life and I just want to say thank you. Thank you doesn’t really say enough. When the…
To the Editor: A letter from Chris Wiegard that appeared in the Village News was recently called to my attention. Wiegard questions using the Maggie Walker Governor’s School Jazz Band to perform at a political event – the appearance of Donald Trump at the Chesterfield County Republican Committee’s fund raiser in the spring. I hope the band was paid. I also hope there were no Mexican students in the band. Trump’s later comments on Mexicans in this country should be shattering to any such student musicians. The Chesterfield County Democratic Committee paid a musician to perform at its June fund…
To the Editor: As I get older, I find myself getting crankier and crankier. Chris Weigard’s recent column on Confederate flags and statues fed this condition. He says, stop celebrating Confederate Heritage Month, and call it Civil War Heritage Month. Well, apparently it isokay to have Black History Month and LGBT Month, which annoy many people, but hey, let us compromise. Instead of either Confederate Month or Civil War Heritage Month, how about calling it the War of Northern Aggression Month? And, yes, it is called the War of Northern Aggression for a reason. The North invaded the South to…
To the Editor: Hurrah to Dorothy Jaeckle and Chesterfield Planning Commission for their beautiful James River Industrial Park. I am so happy that they are interested in beautifying the Enon area. I have the privilege of driving Lawing Drive as my route to work several days a week, and so far I am not impressed. The fence surrounding this park is a big eyesore with green and brown plastic on it for “privacy.” The grass has not been completely cut and trimmed since day one, and the “Open House” sign is ready to curl up. The dumpsters have been there…
To the Editor: We moved our business, the Beverage Equipment Company, to Chester over 35 years ago. We employed eight people and serviced three states from our Chester location. Through the years, my wife Jeanne and I have transitioned our business from service to retail, moving from a location in the lower level in our building to the upstairs retail location. When we opened The WeekEnd Brewer – Home Wine and Beer Supply in 1988, we never knew the impact we would have on the wine and beer community. Our involvement with helping start the Chester Community Association and the…
To the editor: Should the confederate flag appear on the WELCOME sign for Chester? Is it a symbol of welcome? I have nothing against the sons or daughters of the Confederacy. Put their names on the welcome sign. But not that symbol. It is perceived by millions of people as a symbol of something else. Lisa Stanfield
To the Editor: I am proud of the dedication of the teachers and the hard work of students in Chesterfield Public Schools. I believe the majority of the parents also believe this. I was a teacher in this system for many years, and I know the day-to-day challenges that teachers face while continuing to provide the best possible instruction. The generally positive perception has taken a hit with the many articles that have been written recently about the custodial outsourcing and capital expenditures in Chesterfield County Public Schools. My concern is the outsourcing of the custodial services which is being…
