Hello and welcome back to the new Dogpound. Well, technically not new, but we are in a “new” year, so that will have to count. The other day I received an e-mail at work from a lady on the other side of the offices, which was a surprise to me, since she will hardly speak to me even when we meet in the office break room. Anyway, she said our HR manager – was leaving the company (which was another surprise since I am on the bottom of the office gossip chain), and would I like to help with the…

To the Editor: Let’s do this!  I would hope for the approval and passing of the Courthouse Landing Project proposed for the area along Rts. 10/288/Courthouse Road area.  I have been impressed with those who have put these plans together for such a helpful asset to our community.   I have lived in Chesterfield County for just over 30 years with my first residence being on Hull St. Road near Courthouse Road.  I have seen growth take place all along Hull Street Road, along Courthouse Road, along Midlothian Turnpike and along Route 10.  I knew Courthouse Road before it became…

This article will be dated December 25, 2019, but you might be reading this on Christmas Eve. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of fire safety every day of your life. Fires at Christmas seem to hit a bit harder, but if you lose a loved one to a fire in August, it is just as painful. I remember a house fire that occurred a few years back, on Christmas Eve. I know that I may sound like a broken record, but the message is worth repeating, if you change one thing that makes your family safer. The narrative went…

As this is the time of the year when folks set out to decorate their homes for Christmas, I thought that I would share a few reminders to keep you and your home safe. Every year, a tragic accident or fire occurs during this time of the year. My goal with this article is to provoke you to think about every step you take, in adorning your home with the sights of the season.  I will start with lights that you may put up on the outside. The first thing that you want to ensure is that the lights work…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving and you are getting ready to prep for Christmas. I had a nice Thanksgiving; I drove to my sister’s house in Ohio, which is a long 5-hour drive, but this was mainly on freeways and the weather was nice, so it was not too bad.  Along with her husband, we watched the Buckeyes, once again, beat the “team from up North,” for the 8th time in a row. Despite all that good stuff, there was one small incident that sprung up unexpectedly.…

Cartoon by Mark Miranda RE: 20SN0526 Court House Landing aka ‘Project Corner’ By Mike Uzel, member of Chesterfield Citizens United Two community meetings by the developer and Chesterfield County have been held concerning a proposed mixed-use development at the corner of Route 10 and Courthouse Road, at the entrance ramp to 288, one on Sept. 23, 2019 and one on Nov. 21, 2019. At the first meeting there was no mention of Chesterfield Economic Development Authority (EDA) involvement in the project. The next day, Phil Lohr, a Chesterfield Citizens United member, discovered in the Planning file that approximately half (59…

There have been three apartment fires in our area in about 72 hours. An apartment building is built to house multiple families. Most apartment buildings are outfitted with a sprinkler system, designed to extinguish or keep the fire in check, while building occupants have the opportunity to escape. The problem with an apartment fire is that a fire in one apartment can affect many different families. I have written many times about the absolute necessity for those living in an apartment to have renters insurance. Many times, people have escaped from these fires with nothing but the clothes on their…

H ello and welcome back to the madding world of the Dogpound. “I am going completely mad! I tell you! Mad! They are driving me insane! I am not lying!” Do you remember the song from 1966 that was titled, “They’re coming to take me away, Ha-Haa!” Maybe you are not old enough.Check it out on Youtube. It was a comical song that actually reached No.3 on the Billboard chart, but was pulled from playlists after 6 weeks because health professionals and organizations thought it made fun of the mentally ill. Actually, the song was about a person missing his…

I recently heard that a friend of mine was dealing with the aftermath of a fire in his home. The fire involved a sofa that caught fire, as a result of a child playing with a lighter or matches. I have written about this subject, on numerous occasions. My expertise on this subject is tied to two years, 2004-2006, where I re-wrote and managed the Juvenile Firesetter Program for Chesterfield Fire & EMS. You may say, “That’s too long to know what is happening in 2019 concerning children and fire setting.” The fact of the matter is that every child…

Hello and welcome back to the holidays in the Dogpound. I am not sure if we will have an issue or not with Thanksgiving being on Thursday, but I will dutifully prepare one.  Either way I am, for the first time in a while, on time for a holiday article, or I will be like that Thanksgiving turkey in your refrigerator, a leftover you enjoy long after the event has passed. Anyway, in any event, it is time to count our blessings both big and small. Especially the small ones, those that you see every day and enjoy every day,…
