Many in the Bruce Farms subdivision in Chester have expressed a desire to help a neighbor rebuild after an electrical fire destroyed his home at 4617 Bruce Road in the early morning hours May 18. The structural damage has been estimated at approximately $120,000. There is no insurance to help with the rebuild. The American Red Cross has provided temporary shelter for the homeowner at a local hotel. The Bruce Farms community would like to invite you to join us by demonstrating your compassion and support. Individually we may help a little, but acting as a community we can do…

An interesting thing happened at our home Monday. Our grandson had spent the night Sunday. It was Monday morning, and we had been up for a little while. I set my alarm clock, but got up before it went off. It started going off, and I asked my wife what it was. Our grandson got up quickly, took my hand, and led me outside. After a few moments, I realized that he was treating the alarm clock like an activating smoke alarm and led me to a safe place. When we got outside, I asked him about his grandma, who…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. I hope you had a nice Memorial weekend, and I hope you paid proper tribute to everyone in who has given so we can enjoy freedom. Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and started out as a way to honor the many soldiers who died during the Civil War. On May 5, 1868 General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance to be held on May 30. Many states adopted this date as a holiday but…

Editor’s note: The following came from a public comment session at the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors’ May 23 meeting. I have just a few comments and questions … about the recently withdrawn megasite rezoning application by the Economic Development Authority. I know that the county reimbursed the EDA for the $75,000 rezoning application fee. We have never had an explanation as to why that was done. The EDA says the board of supervisors approves all county funds paid to the EDA, so you must have approved this. I believe the citizens of Chesterfield deserve a refund of that $75,000,…

James 4:14 states, “Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” We have experienced great tragedy in our Chesterfield community recently. In the period of a week, two children were killed on the railroad tracks and two children died after being left in a hot vehicle. There is hardly a day that goes by that we do not hear about another structure fire that has displaced the occupants. There are also few days that an ambulance or engine does…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. I was reading the Sunday paper, and I came across an interesting headline that tweaked my interest. The title read: “My daughter told me to stop being a hermit crab.” In short, the story was about a 40-something single mom who had just gotten out of a bad two-year relationship, her first after her divorce, and she was about as low on the “loser” totem pole she could be. Her 11-year-old daughter had finally had enough and sympathetically told her mother that she had to stop living her life…

Though life may be going great right this moment, are your affairs in order? If you have family willing to walk with you through anything, then you might be OK when something catastrophic occurs. I have said this before and I am saying it again: Everyone needs an advocate! A close family is the best advocate you can have, but what if you have no family, or maybe you have family, but they are unwilling to step up? You must take care of this before you are unable to take care of yourself. If you are legally married, though I…

Hello and welcome back to the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Based on the weather of late, it appears we are going to pretty much skip over spring and go right into summer. Along with summer comes yard work, and that means bringing out the hoses and sprinklers. Every year I discover that Washington is not the only place that has problems with leaks. I don’t know about you, but I seem to be very hard on hoses and the sprayer heads. I don’t buy the cheap ones, but after one season of use something happens to them. I drag…

Though we are a little over a week away from Memorial Day, more and more people are headed to the water, compliments of this warm weather. Fishing from the shore, fishing from a boat, boating and walking along the beach are just a few of the activities taking place. Sadly, there have been drowning cases this early in the season. Therefore, I think it prudent to write about water safety. Where children are concerned, parental supervision is an absolute necessity when water is in play. Just like cooking requires our full attention, so does watching children around water. This is…

Hello and welcome back the wonderful world of the Dogpound. Just recently I have been thinking about accidents, and I will tell you why, but first let’s review my history of car accidents. I have been in a few accidents, but thank the good Lord, I have never been in one that was really serious. Now I did have two that had potential written all over them; in one case, a young kid for some reason decided to make a U-turn out of the clear blue sky, right in front of me. I hit the side of the truck a…
