August sales soar on year, rebound from restrained July According to the August 2016 Home Sales Report released by the Virginia Association of REALTORS® (VAR), residential real estate sales have rebounded strongly from a lagging July and are markedly higher than at this time last year. CHESTERFIELD – Sabra, maker of hummus dips, with a processing plant at the Walthall Industrial Plant, has launched a campaign and challenged others to join in efforts to alleviate the effects of food deserts. “Plants With a Purpose” has begun with a pilot program in the company’s backyard in, Richmond City and Chesterfield County. The company established an on-site garden and is coordinating with Renew Richmond, a nonprofit dedicated to urban agriculture in underserved communities, to create community education programming. Sears Holdings which owns Kmart is revving up their efforts to shut 50 unprofitable stores including the Chester store on Jeffferson Davis Highway. In May of 2015, the Kmart in Colonial Heights closed. At this time, it is expected that the store will close in June with liquidation sales beginning this month. Sears is struggling as well, the chain’s same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, dropped 6.9 percent in the most recent quarter. They fell 7.2 percent at Kmart. Sunflower Gardens, a new assisted living facility in North Prince George, welcomed over a hundred guests to its open house and tours of its new Alzheimer’s Specialty Center last Wednesday. The new 35,000 sq. ft. unit, will house 48 residents with 16 people in each of the three neighborhoods that are connected to a town center. The new addition is connected to the current building for staff and use of the full kitchen in the main building.
